what are the best hard drives for reliability these days? need abotu 5tb of storage!

It varies by model, most people also use data from Backblaze which is not ideal for comparative purposes (24/7 in a DC with a chassis full of other drives vs your personal PC) and by the time they have a reasonable data set to look at, the drives themselves are often past the optimum £/GB point. Generally people seem to like WD’s, personally warranty has never been what I would describe as amazing, I have had multiple DOA’s for warranty replacements, and you are usually given re-certified drives, even if you have paid full whack for an advanced replacement.

The other part of your question concerns me, if a drive fails, you have a backup anyway right? The optimum at present is roughly £17/TB last I looked, but that’s based on 12TB externals and once you split the case, warranty is unlikely.

RAID is not a substitute for a backup, it never has been and shouldn’t be confused with being. People don’t use R5 now with modern drive sizes as it’s mathematically guaranteed to result in an imperfect rebuild, that leaves R1 and protection against single drive failure. I’d suggest considering what is important to you and how it’s backed up before buying anything, imagine literally everything you have was gone, what are you not going to be able to replace/miss? That needs to be backed up.

would mostly be inconvenient to be honest ha ha movies and games and things id need to re download from various places

pictures are all on my onedrive or google drive from my phone auto upload or on the old memory cards from my camera (a sort of backup ha, i just keep them and get new ones)
