It's the best JRPG of the generation that i've had a proper go with (i haven't had a chance to really get into Tales of Vesperia yet so that may change). I've played every other JRPG worth mentioning and this is pretty much the only one that gets nearly everything 'right'.
It's got great characters (they seem generic at first but you soon realize there's more to them and i've grown to love a couple as much as i did with good Final Fantasy games). The storyline again takes a while to really become interesting, but it's good from the start and becomes excellent as it develops. It's got a great and inventive combat system, a huge set of equipment and customisation, every characters combat style is completely different (but all useful!). The artistic direction is outstanding, you really do feel like you're moving through a massive world as soon as you leave the starting town. It's got a huge number of optional quests which are generally varied and interesting but they are just that, completely optional. It can be anything from collecting ingredients for a mother to cook to helping rebuild an entire city.
My quibbles are that the graphics, while outstanding for the Wii, are incredibly dated. They don't use proper animated cutscenes often enough, often opting for the simple 'jaw moves up and down a lot and generic preset animations play to indicate emotion', but this could be because the cutscenes are so well animated i want more. It's also a bit TOO big, you can find yourself spending hour upon hour obsessing over hunting that particular rare monster, or looking for that last landmark within a massive sprawling jungle only to realize you haven't actually continued with the storyline over the past couple of days (again these things are optional though, i'm a completionist).
I've played Tales of Symphonia and loved it, i personally prefer this.
Oh and it's got full Japanese audio which is always a bonus for me!
