What Are You Reading?

recently read an ocuk thread and picked up a pile of books

Pegasus Bridge by Stephen E. Ambrose: read it and very good. It is the story of possibly the most important target on D-day. "hold until relieved....hold until relieved"
Attack State Red: about half way through and really good. You hear all the depressing news about british soldiers getting hurt on the news, just good to read what we are actually giving the taliban in return.

still to read:
Sniper 1
Vulcan 607
Eight Lives Down

got all 5 for about £12 2nd hand :)

Arthur C. Clarke - 2063 The Third Odyssey

Pretty good series of books, although the first one (2001) is by far the best and the series has been party ruined by interfering movie franchises.

I'm now onto the last book in the series - 3001 - and I can definitely say the series gets worse as it goes on. I'm still reading it to find out if there is any sort of definitive ending, but I'd definitely recommend people stop reading after 2010.

I am reading the Ravenor Omnibus on the way to work, and the Absolute Sandman Vol. 1 by Neil Gaiman at home (as it is a touch heavy and valuable to lug around!)

Tokyo Vice. About halfway through, not as good as the hype led me to believe.

George Pelecanos says its good, and he should know. I'm after some new books for my plane journey to Tokyo...not sure if reading this will make me afraid to leave my hotel though? :p

Nearly finished The Rapture by Liz Jensen, pretty good.

Currently reading "Colour of Magic" by Terry Pratchett. Wanted to make a start on the discworld series but I can't say I'm enjoying this first book too much.

The first 2 books aren't really a good representation of the rest of the series, but they're worth sticking out just to understand the Discworld.

Equal Rites (book 3) is a better read, then from Mort onwards they hit an awesome run. I can't recommend anything from Monstrous Regiment on though.

Agree. Start with Mort, where the series really hits it's stride. You wont miss any continuity or character progression. You can always go back and read the first two, but if you don't it wont matter too much.

The series peaks with Night Watch, in my opinion, and whilst it's great as a stand-alone, it truly shines if you've read the rest of the series, or at the very least the rest of the Watch books, so you have journeyed to that point in the character's lives with them.

I'm on a Wilbur Smith binge.

I've just read When The Lion Feeds, The Sound Of Thunder and A Sparrow Falls. Now I'm onto The Burning Shore.

Highly recommended.

i second this, imo he is the best african writer, also excellent is monsoon or any of his egyptian novels

edit. forgot to say i am reading wilbur smith, power of the sword, just started, so jury is still out

Just started The girl with the dragon tattoo. Its been a long while since I read a novel normally stick to stuff based on real events, but thought I'd give this a go

Hated that book, can't understand the hype. but i'm in the minority, everyone seems to love it.

i've just finished The Pig/House by Edward Lee. One of the sickest, deranged novels i have ever read but quite compulsive. Must check out more of his stuff :D

Currently halfway through Making Money, but more because I've just finished Going Postal and it seemed right, plus I've only ever read it once before. I can't really agree with most people claiming the series went downhill after Night Watch - not so much with Making Money, because I sure don't remember enjoying it as much as others, but Thud! was one of my favourites and Going Postal is also high in my estimation of the books covering less recurrent characters, so really it's only Making Money that's not met my expectations.

Think I'll go back and read some others after this. I've just read through the watch books, my favourite group - Every time I reach that last bit underground in Thud!, where the Summoning Dark meets the inner Vimes, I get a bit of a shiver in my spine. Next will be Small Gods, then Thief of Time.
