What board game loot did you get?

Got myself Eclipse and Eldritch Horror, got Discworld: The Witches and both The Massing at Osgiliath and The Voice of Isengard for the LOTR LCG.

King of Tokyo is basically Godzilla Yahtzee, but apparently it's quite quick moving and fun.

King of Tokyo is more a dice game than board game it is fast and fun.

We only managed a quick game but here are my thoughts:-

You are each a huge monster rampaging towards Tokyo, the first one to get in gets points but is attacked by the others. If you are in Tokyo you can get out and swap with a monster who attacks you.

Each turn consists of rolling six dice, you can re-roll twice more if you want. You can get attack points, energy points or victory points, or combinations. Attack points hurt the monster in Tokyo or all the others if you are in Tokyo. Energy points are used to buy bonus cards which can do all sorts of extras. Victory points are used to win the game (or you win by killing all other monsters).

That is a pretty poor description but playing it was a good laugh, the bonus cards were good and it was pretty stressful being in Tokyo.

Hope to play it again to get a better feel for it, but on a first play I would recommend.

Both expansions for Pandemic 2013

I would strongly recommend getting these if you like Pandemic.

It not only makes the game more to use the Dice Tower description 'thematic', but it also makes the game more fun whilst allowing you to choose the difficulty level from
1.) Standard with in the lab (easy)
2.) In the lab and on the brink using 6 new Epidemic cards (A little challenging)
3.) In the lab and on the brink using 6+ old Epidemic cards and mutation (A little more challenging)
4.) In the lab and on the brink using 6 new Epidemic cards and mutation (Can be very difficult)

The characters add some really good roles
The events add some real life savers
The board and pieces are polished and make the game feel really special

All in all two brilliant expansions and so if you like Pandemic then these are a must

It's still in the cellophane at the moment :)

I think it will drag it out even more than the game takes already lol we have all the expansions released previously, it's kind of a running joke that I'll buy the latest one for my gf for Christmas. You probably know but it feels like every expansion you add to the game draws the gameplay out exponentially the more you play with. However the City did get some good reviews, and now we've come this far it would just feel like something was 'missing' if we didn't complete all corner tiles lol

Woof, you must have a big table and long arms! I play with my two sons (and anyone else who will play), we have not got any 'board' expansions yet, still just the cards but we now have four decks of adventure cards over an inch high! As you say it gets diluted a lot, our favourite item is the Orb of Knowledge but in the last three games we haven't seen it!

Been playing Relic (based on Talisman) since Christmas and enjoying it a lot. It is more complex that Talisman and as such a bit harder for by eight year old but it seems to work very well.

Dilution is the word I was looking for. I do enjoy it, and I think it is a good game, but when each expansion adds more and more adventure cards, it starts to become too big - I think my adventure card 'deck' is about 8-10 inches! Like you we split it into smaller decks because they won't stack in one anymore due to the amount.

I've found games take longer because the amount of monsters doesn't seem constant the more expansions I have. For example you can draw 4-5 cards (at a guess) and may never see a monster. Then a strength 7 dragon will be drawn or something way overpowered for the characters. The base game I feel had a good equal mix, but there seems to be events and places now which although fun and interesting, stop players leveling up and turn what was already a long game into a bit of a slog at times.

Personally I didn't like it at all when I played it, glad you're enjoying it though.

We've got some expansions for Carcassonne coming, really looking forward to getting more tiles :D

Finally got to play King of Tokyo, and everyone enjoyed it.

Played different configurations as well, first with 3 players which was quite a quick game (I took out the two other players on on the same turn), then a few games with 4 players, which were a bit longer. Certainly longer than 30 minutes indicated on the box.

Later in the night we tried it with 5, though by then it was getting on and a few of us were quite drunk by then. Still worked but the game seemed to fly by.

I learnt we played it ever so slightly wrong with the first monster to go in to Tokyo (thanks to Boardgamegeek).

We thought the first player who got a claw, on any of their three dice rolls, had to put that claw dice to one side and go in to Tokyo and then they could finish their rolls with 5 dice.

Turns out it's if you have any claws on your third and final roll, and additional claws do not do damage to other players.

Oh, we also tried Resistance which I thought was really good but that was kinda ruined by someone being too drunk to concentrate.

He laid a fail card even though he was a resistance member, because he didn't like a game mechanic that "Didn't give him a choice what card to lay"

If you've not played it, Rebels would never play a fail card, as their job is to ensure missions succeed.

Been playing Relic (based on Talisman) since Christmas and enjoying it a lot.

I really dislike both Relic and Talisman. The games are too long for what they are and roll-and-move has no place in a modern game. However the good thing about tabletop gaming is the fact there is something for everybody!

Some people don't share my passion for serious eurogames, for example. Don't know why though... :D

Aye, nothing wrong with serious gaming but when your gaming buddies are 8 and 11 (like my two sons) you have some limitations! I prefer this to Game of Life!

Roll and move has no place in modern gaming and at 8 you're old enough for a nice medium weight euro like Castles of Burgundy and by 11 should be playing Agricola and Le Havre like a champ. :D

Still, you're spot on, most hobby games are much better than The Game of Life. *shudders*

Got Agricola ready for roll out soon!
