What board game loot did you get?

I didn't get any for Christmas, but i asked for some for my birthday which was on the 5th. I ended up getting Power Grid, King of Tokyo and Smash Up as late birthday presents, which will be fun playing with friends as i have played them before and they are so much fun.

I got Ticket to Ride Europe, Ticket to Ride Nordic and El Grande with the expansions.

I can't believe how re-playable and addictive Ticket to Ride is. Brilliant game! Played it many times since Xmas.

Really chuffed with El Grande. I haven't had a chance to sit down and read the rules for the expansions so can't comment.

Also asked for Puerto Rico but I guess that'll have to wait..

Just got 3 new games for my ever growing collections:
  • Carcassonne
  • 7 Wonders
  • Lost Cities the board game

I am thinking of ordering
Dixxit
Agricola or Stone Age
King of Tokyo

What could you recommend that is a little more taxing, but not to involving
Around about the same level as Pandemic

If you're thinking of Agricola, consider Caverna instead. It's quite a bit more expensive, but has a plethora of additional options and is more streamlined to boot. Plus it comes with tons of lovely bits. :D

Ive been thinking about Agricola as well, might be caverna a look.

As a few posts up Ive also played ticket to ride, didn't think id like it but a fun game. Bit like when I played power grid, doesn't sound like a fun concept but good with a group.

Caverna is pricy but boy is it gorgeous.

I was looking at Caverna, but the sheer number of pieces is off-putting for someone as lazy as myself! I mean, wtf:

300+ wooden pieces for animals, resources and dwarfs
60+ acrylic nuggets for ore and ruby
16 game boards
16 punchboards with over 400 pieces
30 cards
1 score shee
1 rulebook
1 appendix

That's quite redonkulous. Amazon puts the box at 3.4KG!

That sounds about right. On the other hand, if you pick up a couple of storage trays from Home Bargains you only have to sort it once and after that everything is easy to find. I can set it up in less than five minutes and put it away in less than ten. I'll take a couple of photos when I get home.

Caverna is probably better for most people. Agricola is great but it can be punishing.

I hear what you are all saying about Caverna and I personally would like to own it, but the problem is that I play lots of games with my misses and she isn't really sold on the theme.

She LOVES Pandemic and the whole co-op games like Forbidden Island and we enjoyed Carcassonne. I have not played 7 Wonders yet as we need to arrange with friends as it is primarily a 3+ player game. Lost Cities the board game is great fun, but not at all taxing and I am left feeling I want something a little more strategic.

We want something a little more involving and deep, but a more female friendly theme.

Caverna packing photos, as promised.

The player boards are placed in the bottom of the box and the furnishing boards are stowed vertically along one side.

The action boards are placed on top of the player boards. They tesselate quite nicely, though one 1x3 board has to stay on top.

These bags and small trays and the scorepad are inserted last in spare space up the side of the box, but are shown here in the box as I took the photos in unpacking order. One tray contains coins, harvest tokens and low level weapon markers (1-3, 4-5), the other contains food tokens and higher level weapon markers (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14). The bags contain chits to replace large numbers of commodities and the action deck, which determines on what turn various actions become available.

Adding the bottom tray with the player markers, cavern furnishings by colour, single space meadows, ruby mines, and basic field/cave tiles. You can now see where the items in the above photo are kept when the box is packed.

Adding the top tray with the bank of all commodities plus ore mines, single space tunnels and large pastures.

The rulebook and appendix are then placed on top and that's it. The lid stands 6 or 7mm above flush with everything in, but if you know you're going to be playing with 5 or less you can remove a couple of player boards for a perfect fit.

Not sure what qualifies as a "female friendly" theme? My wife enjoys Russian Railroads, Snowdonia, Caverna, Agricola, Glück Auf and Castles of Burgandy to name a few.

She isn't, so far, a fan of co-op games and likes direct conflict in Memoir '44 and 1775: Rebellion. She also isn't a big fan of high fantasy (but a little is fine like in Caverna) nor Science fiction.

I'm sure you'll find something that thematically works for the both of you. Caverna is great though. See if you can try it out.
