What book are you reading...

Currently reading "Touch Wood" autobiography of Duncan Hamilton (1953 Le Mans winner). The bloke is a mad man, he won it drunk on brandy, but im laughing at every page.

Just finished The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone. Swarms of killer spiders infest the planet. Was enjoyable, quite short and for the most part very fast paced. It is first in a series and as such, doesn't really end, just sort of stops. I'm looking forward to the next one, Skitter, in May.

I really, really dislike spiders and was a bit warey of starting this book, however it wasn't as skin crawly as I expected :)

At the moment I'm trying to finish book nr 10 "Crossroads of Twilight" in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

After that I'm going to put my nose towards "The City of Mirrors" by Justin Cronin, the last book in the "The Passage" trilogy.

Just finished the Ben Kane trilogy, starting with Forgotten Legion. Loved it, huge fan of Conn Iggledon's books and although not as good as the Emperor series was really enjoyable. Will definitely check out his other stuff later.

A Man on the Moon next.

Joyland - Stephen King

Not a massive fan of King's work as he can waffle and often struggles with a good ending for a book. A decent crime thriller with supernatural elements and as a fan of the Charlie Parks series I found it enjoyable. Relatively short by King's standards at less than 300 pages but a good holiday read 8/10.

Starting 'Consider Phlebas' by Iain M Banks - it's been on my bookshelf for years and somehow I've never got around to reading it...

My favourite of the Culture series - must get around to reading it again.

Just finished Clive Barker's Imajica - enjoyed it (2nd time reading it - read it when it was originally published in '91) but not as much as I did the first time around - felt padded out in the middle.

Just started Troy Blackford's 'Under The Wall'. Secret government departments and cats with supernatural powers. Half way through, quite interesting, the parts written from the cats perspective is well thought through. Started this one (2nd in the series) as it was in the kindle flash sale and picked it up for 99p (and because Troy Blackford was whinging no one had bought the book, on his Twitter).

Finished Ted Simon - Dreaming of Jupiter (2nd one where he follows the route he took round the world in the 70s in the 00s).

Lee Child - Die Trying (Jack Reacher 2) at the moment. Easy read, good story. I'll gradually get through all 21-22 that are out, between other books.

Might re-start the Wheel of Time series next. Lost interest about half way through the first one for some reason, story was really good, but I just got distracted I think... definitely didn't put it down because it was bad.

I do want to scare myself though. I want something similar to the Conjuring films (or /r/nosleep), in book format. Not too sure what though.

I read The Martian a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it thoroughly. Was the first book I'd read for sometime. I saw the film first and then was told the book was significantly better, which it was. It's not long and definitely worth a read, particularly if you're geeky. :)

Finally got around to the three body problem, which in the sci fi, sciency world is massively hyped up. Hope it holds up to the claims, only just statted. Interesting so far.

Is there a particular order to read the other novels in? Or - should I just dive in with whatever comes to hand?

If you mean the Culture stuff, order of publishing is as good as any other. They are all stand-alones, with minimal inter-book references (usually just Easter Eggs.

If you mean the non (or barely)-SF stuff, then it's a bit more complicated.

Just finished a couple of books -

Warriors of the Storm (The Last Kingdom Series, Book 9) - Bernard Cornwell.
Another superb book following the exploits of Uhtred around Englaland. Can't wait for book 10 this winter!

Messenger's Legacy - Peter Brett
A short story in the Painted Man series. It was OK I guess. I've read books 1, 2 and 3 in the series and they got increasingly worse so doubt I'll read any further. I only read this as I had nothing else to hand.

Now I'm onto The Lies of Locke Lamora because it has had good mentions here. Slowly getting into it, I think I should enjoy it.

A friend gave me the 3 books so far for kindle. Wasn't too bothered about reading them. Was hooked about halfway into the first, then devoured the other 2. The fourth has been delayed (again). Its a trilogy of 7.
