If its the "edginess" you like in Abercrombie best bets are probably

Erikson
Glenn Cook
George R R Martin

There are probably more less mainstream authors who are ruthless with the characters and grim in the story but those above are the better ones (IMO)

Are there any authors who are ruthless with the characters but it's not a case of EVERYBODY DIES? I mean, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if a Girl came back from a House and her mission was to kill some Wolves...

Not everyone dies in al this books, the majority don't. It's just a more realistic and (IMO) better way to write a novel that the hero isn't superstaromgzoricanmotbeinjuredevah!!! Which quite frankly is ridiculous. It makes fun reading for escapism, which I don't mind occasionally, but knowing that the hero will stroll through the book regardless of what happens and get the girl is a bit tiring.

I finally finished The Stand!! It took me ages! Didn't like the end, Stephen King is bad at endings, I'm not quite sure why I keep bothering!

Reading the Jedi Path now just as a little break. Then will probably be on to Pet Sematary or something similar.

Just finished reading The Day After Tomorrow by Allan Folsom and really didn't see the final revelation coming.

It should have been obvious, I realised after the fact, but it gave the book a great ending.

Took me 3 sessions to read it as it is 692 pages long but it held me all the way through

Just finished number 6 in James Patterson's Alex Cross series.

Roses are Red

Was a very good story but please think of some more baddies.

Are the FBI all criminals

Yeah

One of my sisters just brought round History of Tractors in Ukrainian one of the Marina Lewycka books I haven't yet read.

Will start this in a short while and if its as good as her others I wont be putting it down.

Just received my copies of Abercrombie's The Blade Itself and Erikson's Memory of Ice.

Started Blade Itself last night, only the first one (or two) chapters done though.

"Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves" by Matthew Reilly. Absolute balls to the wall, adrenaline filled, military nonsense - I loved every word! :D

In a slight departure from all the adult epic fantasy/sci-fi I've been reading recently just started Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Always enjoy a book set in London after living there for a few years and I like the irreverent writing style, reminds me of Douglas Adams somewhat.

Well I did as thought and read Marian Lewycka's History of Tractors in Ukrainian straight through last night and I wasn't let down.

She really knows how to tell a story, interspersing comedy with history with great aplomb. Now I have to get my hands on Various Pets Alive and Dead

I had also forgotten to post that I read Stan Potinger's The Last Nazi the day before.

Whilst the concept was very good the writer let it down by making it seem like a too-fast paced US in-your-face-action story.

Ito nly made me think about whether it is correct for writers to make money out of the holocaust rather than Wow! what else has he wrote that I must read.

I'm a little way into 'The Reality Dysfunction' by Peter F Hamilton.

Pretty good so far, might read the rest of the Night's Dawn Trilogy if I enjoy it.

An excellent trilogy. Definitely worthwhile reading the whole lot.

I tend to dislike Hamilton and would almost go as far as to say I hate his method of story telling, but them out of the blue (for me anyway) he nailed the Nights Dawn trilogy, one of the better scifi series I have read. So many memorable moments and I have re-read it three times :p

If you want a modern/fantasy book set in London, I'd recommend Kraken by china Mieville. Cracking stuff.

(There tends to be a marmite relationship with Mieville, so be aware)
