What can I get for...

S2000?
£10k - Way more than you need
Fun - Check
2ltr - Check
35mpg - Erm, if you don't want to have any fun then sure

How about something like a Cliosport 182 real tidy example for 3k
2litre check,
and doing 70 miles a day I used to get 35mpg easy.

However you could then look at newer hot hatches if that is too old.
Fiesta st's
newer clio models like the 197
Corsa VXR
For between 3-10k you could pick up a nice hot hatch, the budget would also stretch to a nice focus st but that will not get you the lower running costs you would like.
Maybe need to narrow things down so people know what cars you like?

There are so many, mazda 3mps again or the fabia vrs for some differant suggestions.

Personally I would not spend the whole budget at 21 with your 3rd year at uni still to do(or masters as well). However I dont know your financial situation :) All I know is there is loads to choose from!

If it helps I had a 172 and 182 and loved both.

MX5 is a safe bet but I suspect 6K will get you into what you need and provide lots of options to up the power and handling if that is your bag. They are cheap cars to own and run. In 4 years my wife's MX5 has needed 3 services (I think) at around £160 each, a wiper blade, some pads front and back and a set of tyres and returns 36mpg over last 40k miles. Spend £100 getting the alignment sorted, perhaps some lowering springs and some suspension bits to tighten it up and you have a great, safe, cheap car. Spend £4K on a turbo and you have something seriously rapid up to 120mph for track day fun.

I'll have to look into the insurance of hot hatches, I was under the impression that they were expensive as they are something that new drivers want. You're right, I've got a year of placement then 2 more uni years left so its got to last a while this car! Can't see me being able to afford one after uni!

You're right in saying theres to much choice! I can't decide! But I'm coming from a Mk5 Golf GT FSI 2.0, so it has to be nicer than that!

My perfect car would be something that is reasonably nippy (8 secs to 60 ish?), cheap to run, and can do some motorway miles. I couldn't really have a small sports car like an mx5 as id need more space.

EDIT: My perfect car would be a B5 RS4 avant.. slight issue with the running costs however

You are 21, at Uni and ALREADY have a pretty nice car? (Mk5 Golf GT)

is it worth changing?

It was my mums, and she's just traded it in for a new A3, I don't think she'd appreciate me 'burrowing' the new car for my placement!

Tbh this!

I'd presumed you were coming from something more "usual" for the average student.

Think you missed my previous post :) .... I would have asked mum if instead of trading it in, i could buy it off her, but with it going through 2 new learners, and 3 drivers in total it was starting to fall apart.

£10k, fun, reasonably sensible and not a bomb to run. (Im 21, student, going on placement next year).

Something around the 2ltr mark, 35+ mpg?

Thanks.

Landy Defender 2.5 Diesel. A good one can be had for around £3000, they're immense fun, very sensible and don't cost a lot to run and maintain.

I did.

In that case, I refer you back to my initial answer, e46 325 / 330i loads left to run it and, more to the point IMO at your age, go live a little with the change! :)

I found the insurance was only slightly more, it seems it is more down to postcode and statistics now. I think my insurance was about 600 on my first 172 at 22. But this was a few years ago now.
How about a Mazda 3 sport? Something a bit differant but I'm not fully sure on running costs.

Think I've found a winner... 2008 on a 54 plate Audi A3 2.0T FSI S-line, 48k, serviced 6k ago, RS4 wheels, full leather, extras include Bose stereo, and auxiliary in. For £9980.

One thing I found surprising, emissions are 164g/km which I consider to be low for a 2.0T?

Just depends if its around in 2 weeks time when i'm back for easter!

2008 on a 54 plate? Also if it is a 54 plate then 10k is a lot to spend on a ten year old car. But that's just me :)
They are solid cars

You're 21. Buy something with no roof and a pussy magnet equipped as standard. Unless the rear seats are for transporting more than one girl at a time? Spend £8k on an S2000 and the rest of the budget on insurance.

My bad, I mean 58 plate!

Hopefully the girlfriend would appreciate the extra passengers as well..
