what car for a 19 yr female

i used to have a 52reg clio 1.2 (both the 8 and 16v model) and they were genuinely fine cars, the only problem was the dealers.

i would recommend them at the drop of a hat. drove well, esp at long journeys (shockingly good for a small 1.2 car, i put it down to the seats)

fiestas, the only memory i have of those is how much they end up squeeking and rattling in the interior, wouldnt touch another.

corsa, only had them as hire cars, thank god. even the people ive known to own them hated them. evil cars.

micras, regardless of how dull people say they are, the 1.0 is a revvy little bugger and is actually good fun to drive on the county roads, but simply is not the vehicle of choice for long journeys. i would still recommend it miles above the fiesta and corsa

In terms of the cheapest long term option and the least hassle, i'd recommend a VW Golf. I just made £500 profit on mine with my gf having put 4000 miles on it. Was the easiest car i ever sold too as they are so popular.

But for that, you had to put up with owning a 12 year old car for 4-5 months whereas had you just tolerated any depreciation you could have had something half the age.

i love golfs too lol

id have an old golf over the cars listed (i would prefer a genuinely good car over something pretty and new).

id bet that most girls would prefer the newer pretty car even if it was a dog (which may explain the sale or corsas et al)

Being serious about it as far as i can tell girls fall over themselves for Golf's, Fern thought the GTI was marvelous as did all her friends, so much so that one of them offered me £3000 for it when they knew full well that i'd only paid £2500. (i had to travel for it, and car prices are inflated around this immediate area)

They are the easiest and cheapest car's you are likely to come across, total ruinning costs for the GTI over 4000 miles have been -£50 (in that ive made a profit of £50 overall), that includes absolutely everything including insurance, and the insurance still has a while to run, so i guess the profit is even larger.

I wouldnt drive one myself as they are old and i prefer big barges, but as a girlfriend/daughter friendly car you cant do much better.

ive driven both a micra 1.3 (it was a macho blue one OK!!!) and a fiesta 1.25 16v (own)... both great cars, both reliable and both highly recommended... both engines easy reving and adequate enough for most new drivers...

however i feel the driver position and handling is slightly better in the fiesta...

I would avoid the 1litre option, much better knowing the power is there if you need it and i doubt fuel economy would be much difference... plus insurance on a 1.0 isnt going to be THAT much difference in comparison with a 1.3/1.4 etc equivilant... especially for females

1.25 fiesta was cheap to insure for me TPFT £990 iirc (17, male, 0ncb)... fully comp aint really worth it (whoever said it was an extra 10-30 bean is in dream land, talkin at least a couple hundred more)... the zetec engines are great engines and you can get a 1.4 zetec aswell if your after something a bit more nippy...

Corsa i wouldnt touch, heard too much bad feedback on them... clio i wouldnt know about

hope tis helps

edit: who the hell said golfs are ladies cars!!! this is rubbish... nothing feminine about them at all! :p

From your list I'd say a Clio, 1.4 version. Their very low insurance group, 3 or 4 I think so your daughters quote should only be a few hundred. The engines more than capable with a full car and boot to accelerate quickly and their also comfy too.

wow, you must live in the absolute best postcode? who was that with? pass plus etc?

Tom.

ok guys looks like she be buying a 1.4 model car for sure her grandmother has donated a extra £1000 to the car pot
i did ring around today for quotes on micra on fully comp and it was only a xtra £115 to go fully comp so i thing i be going to a car dealer and see what we can get her
now to look what deals we can get for her

she did go inot a dealership with out me this morning and they tried putting her into a smart car
so she rang me to collect her and i told the saleperson to go do one

personally i wouldnt think that 1.4 is necessary. its her first car and shes a girl, its unlikely shell care about performance, but thats just my opinion.

bet she'll be chuffed!

Postcode I suppose isnt a bad one... some companies were after 1200-1300 mark for TPFT (most were more like 2k!) and then tried barclays insurance... came in at around 990 bean TPFT... no pass plus here with a quote like that!

:D

edit: thought you said you were defo after a 1.4 lol... looks a smart micra tho... should be fun to drive :p

Nice little car, but imo hould have bought her a 1.2 or 1.4 though really, 1.0 cars are very sluggish and the saving on the insurance isn't much. If she has a few friends in that car it will slow to a crawl, and if she ever needs a bit of juice when overtaking or in any other potentially difficult situation it just won't be there, and that could be the difference between accident and no accident.

Agreed with Richdog. The 1.25 zetec Fiesta would have been perfect, though even that is slow with 4 people in it.
