What car for approx 2k? Looking for something nice but reliable

Scrap it, don't get a mondeo, you don't even get 7 seats. Get this
Ford Galaxy loads more for your money...

Actually just get this Audi A8, comes with Sat Nav, full leather electric and heated seats, climate control, cruise control etc... More car for your money :D

Climate control, heated electric seats etc, depending on which model of Mondeo you buy of course. They're far better specified across the range than the Focus though.

All can be had in a Focus!!! Granted you may have to look harder...

Are you usually this dense, or are you putting in a special effort for today?

Facetiousness aside, I can't think of anything better than a nice big automatic V8 luxobarge for a commute of any distance. :)

However, the OP probably doesn't want that, so I have made the suggestion of a Mondeo. If you don't like it, that's your problem. If the OP doesn't like it, that's... his problem? My problem? I don't really care, it was a suggestion. I've explained the merits and you've stated that you don't see the point in using said car for this commute. The OP however has yet to comment.

You're being pretty stupid now considering running costs on a Mondeo are identical to a Focus, the only difference is slightly more tax and a small drop in MPG. For me the Mondeo was £500 more a year to insure so I bought the Focus but for others the difference is nowhere near as steep.

Im very happy with my Focus, 1.6, i found Ghia or Lx the best options to go for. Its plenty enough power to get about, cheap to run and maintain as well.

Yes, the same guy that completely self imploded, ended up permabanned and then made another account until he was let back in.

LX is a bit **** in the fact it comes with barely anything. Best buy is the Zetec, you get slightly firmer suspension, more supportive seats and the vast majority have heated screens, mirrors and AC.

You were arguing the toss over £39.56 extra for tyres. Now you are trying to say the running costs of a 2.0 mondeo are the same as a 1.6 focus?

It's already been stated that a focus is £200 cheaper on fuel (based on only 7,500 miles per annum). It's also £70 cheaper to tax. You are also pretty much guaranteed cheaper tyres too, as the mondeo's will come bigger as standard...

You have already pointed out insurance being greater on a mondeo over a focus. From my quick math if you were to buy a Mondeo over your focus it would cost you nearly £800 more per year to run than the 1.6 focus. This is nearly 50% of the vehicles worth...

So, what would you rather have to do a 10 mile commute in. A tidy 1.6 focus which will save you ££££ over a 2.0 mondeo. OP clearly has never stated he needs such a large car, infact he was looking at 1.4 fiestas!!!

Well done OCUK motors, well done, once again a spec me thread ends in ...... Mondeo!

Why would you need a 1.6 to feel sporty, lol.
LX has heated screen standard and AC, better seats for long drives, Zetec seats IMO are not very good for long drives.
A 2004 focus will be showing wear on the springs, so its not hard to fit a lowering kit.
LX tend to be a tad cheaper to buy.

Yes, my lack of illumination ability clearly makes me in no position to comment on car recommendations for someone asking for car recommendations.

Thanks for reminding me.

Not really, you said the difference was enough to pay for a set of tyres on the Focus, it isn't.

And you said a 2.0 mondeo is the same cost to run as a 1.6 focus. IT ISN'T.

Least I wasn't hundreds of pounds out. I also selected a very good brand of tyre, you can get decent hankooks for under £50 a corner, but I genuinely cannot be bothered to get you a link.

LX is the base model for the 1.6 engined cars?!

Get the zetec or the ghia - the zetec seats in the MK1 and MK2 are both very nice, I owned a MK1 zetec 1.6 for over a year as my first car, did over 20k miles and can report the seats are as comfortable as anything, even on long journeys. Stafford to Salcombe was no issue.

In fact, they're better than the seats in my BMW by virtue of the fact they actually hold you in place too - even slow roundabouts in the bmw leads to getting up close and personal with your passenger.

Edit: The zetec springs are soft as **** too - I can only begin to imagine how much roll you get on non-zetec springs.

You can waste all the time you want, you're not going to get a decent tyre fitted for £50 on a Focus because that's exactly the car I have now and I'm having to spend £75 a corner to avoid buying rubbish - Hankooks are £70 a corner fitted.

Most Mondeos will have 205/55 R16 which cost the same as 195/60 R15 fitted on the Focus. Oil and filter the same, brake discs/pads the same etc. All that stands is insurance, the difference is negligible for some people (insurance for me is odd because I live in the UK equivalent of Basra) and you spend £5.80 a month extra on VED. So all you have to deal with is a tiny increase in fuel consumption but you get a newer generation of car with more power and more equipment. You'll also get a newer car because Focuseseses (Foci) tend to hold their value slightly better as they are in demand whereas everyone is scared off by a 2.0 Mondeo because they think it's the size of the QE2 and has fuel consumption measured in gallons per mile when that isn't the case.

I miss how cheap parts for the focus were :(

No, CL was the base model, LX was comfort, Zetec was Sport and Ghia Luxury.

Depends what matter, i wanted all the AC and Heated screen, spring are easy to change, suppose seats are as well, but try fitting a heated screen and AC.
They are available on the Zetec but they were extras.
