What car for approx 2k? Looking for something nice but reliable

You can waste all the time you want, you're not going to get a decent tyre fitted for £50 on a Focus because that's exactly the car I have now and I'm having to spend £75 a corner to avoid buying rubbish - Hankooks are £70 a corner fitted.

Most Mondeos will have 205/55 R16 which cost the same as 195/60 R15 fitted on the Focus. Oil and filter the same, brake discs/pads the same etc. All that stands is insurance, the difference is negligible for some people (insurance for me is odd because I live in the UK equivalent of Basra) and you spend £5.80 a month extra on VED. So all you have to deal with is a tiny increase in fuel consumption but you get a newer generation of car with more power and more equipment. You'll also get a newer car because Focuseseses (Foci) tend to hold their value slightly better as they are in demand whereas everyone is scared off by a 2.0 Mondeo because they think it's the size of the QE2 and has fuel consumption measured in gallons per mile when that isn't the case.

If that doesn't draw a line under this argument, nothing will.

With a Mondeo you get a newer, larger, faster (in the sense that a tortoise is faster than a snail ;)) , more comfortable, better speced car for a negligible increase in running costs. In fact why someone would choose a Focus over a Mondeo at this price point unless they quite literally for the life of them could not get insured on the Mondeo is beyond me.

The way certain people wax lyrical about Ford Focui is quite assuming. Some people here would have you believe it was the defining car of our Generation, not simply an above average medium sized hatchback.

I was under the impression the CL was only available in 1.4 engined cars.

My zetec had heated windscreen and AC as did my brothers - I thought they were standard?

You also get alloys with the zetec, which most definitely were (an unpopular) option on every other trim level. The non sport seats are ****, unless you're 30 stone I guess.

Then fair enough, but LXs tend to be cheaper and there are more of them, so its easier to find one your happy with. Unless you specifically want the Zetec seats and springs.

Alloys were standard on the LX as well after the facelift.

Focus tyres - Goodyear £53.96

Mondeo tyres - Goodyear £62.62

I think you'll find it was quite special in it's time for styling, rear suspension setup and price.

I bought a focus over a mondeo because I wanted something smaller than a mondeo - I didn't want any more toys other than elec windows and AC- ended up getting heated windscreen and mirrors, electric mirrors and remote central locking as part of the bargain - for £950 I think the focus was a pretty sweet car.

The Focus was a superb car in its time, and because of the popularity there are loads about. Which make it a great second hand buy now. Yes its not brilliant at any one thing, but its a great allrounder. Mondeo will definitly cost more, to buy and to run and maintain, if you dont need the space the Focus is the better option.

Yes, my lack of illumination ability clearly makes me in no position to comment on car recommendations for someone asking for car recommendations.

Thanks for reminding me.

It's not your lack of "illumination ability" (whatever that may be), it's simply a lack of sense.

I did have a chuckle over your main beam arguments though :D

There is also a greater amount of focus' on sale compared to mondeo's. So you have a much better chance of getting a one you desire in terms of age, mileage, spec and colour. Rather than being pushed to buy a mondeo when you don't need one by OCUK motors.

£9 difference per tyre, so for a pair of fronts that will last 10k that's a running cost increase of an 1/18th of a penny per mile - staggering I'm sure you'll agree. The reduction in MPG caused by leaving a bag of mints in the car would be more significant. Also that's not bad considering you've picked H rated tyres for the Focus (rated to 125 mph) and W rated for the Mondeo (up to 170 mph).

My 53 plate zetec focus had neither AC nor heated windscreen. So was not standard option

You done especially well to manage that because I must have looked at 8 other Focus Zetecs before buying mine and they all had AC and heated screen. Even my father's 2001 ex-fleet car with tape player has heated screen and mirrors.

Why wouldn't you want a newer car with more kit, a bigger boot and 45 extra bhp for the same money with a negligible difference in running costs? I mean if you were upgraded on a flight to business class, would you turn it down because you didn't want the extra leg room?

In summary, you won't go far wrong with either, so ask yourself what you want from the car.

Space? Fun? 'Sporty' (lololololol) springs and handling (honestly, they're soft, don't worry about a hard ride etc.). Toys? etc.

They're both great cars and neither will disappoint.

No, it won't.

No, that's kind of the point, it will cost LESS for the same age and mileage, as less people want them.

and to run

Servicing and maintenance costs are comparable between the two cars.

and maintain

See above.

if you dont need the space the Focus is the better option.

Why? I'd rather have more car for the same cash.

Not sure how a heavier car will do the same MPG as the lighter one with the same engine.

The mondeo needs the 2 litre minumum, so thats more fuel, more tax, more insurance.
How is that the same.
Even with the same engine, Focus is cheaper to run.

More car? In terms of weight yes.

Just looking through some classifieds it seems there is quite a decent choice of 2006 Mondeos for 2-2.5k, but only utter dross in terms of the Focus (e.g. non-runners, write offs, huge mileage etc).

The mondeo needs the 2 litre minumum,

What's wrong with the 1.8? It's quicker than a 1.6 Focus.
