What card should I buy to replace my ATI5970

I have just sold my Apple 30" cinema display to get something only capable of 1900 x 1200 (Full HD), keeping up with the resultion requirments for the Apple 30" took a top end card like my old 5970. But the 5970 is starting to struggle with the new DX11 games (like the new metro) at the Apple's res of 2500 x 1600. The other thing is the Apple 30" doesn't scale lower resolutions that well, so best pictures is at the max res (2500 x 1600). So I will go out now and buy a Full HD 24" monitor, and my thoughts are, would a 6990 Dual GPU card be worth it...or would a top end single GPU card be good enough to run top res (1900 x 1200) games. And then when it does start to struggle add another card in crossfire/sli, the inital cost I'd imagine would be cheaper just buying the single GPU card over the 6990, which i'd imagine would be very expensive?

Well put it this way, I don't think it'd be ideal to upgrade to just a single GTX580:

I would wait for the 6990 and the GTX595 which should be releasing anytime now. You could try pick up another 5970 second hand to go crossfire, but that's going to be really power hungry. What are the rest of your system specs?

580 SLI.

Selling that monitor was a bad move IMO though. If you'd just downsized the monitor then the 5970 would have easily been able to power a 24".

The monitor is a poor performer when it comes to games, colour adjustment is not available and the brightness is naff, the only thing its got going for it is the size, and the name apple!

I want to go SLI/cross fire root, but with the new tech... 5970 is actually abit dated now, and it lacks in DX11 performance. I was thinking single gpu card for now, and a second after christmas.

So GTX 590/595 is a good option?

My system specs are

Sandy Bridge, I5 2500K at 4.8ghz stable with 1.365 Volts
G.skill 1600mhz memory at 1.5v 4 x 2gb (8gb total)
Asrock extreme 6 P67 Board (Sli/crossfire is only 8X/8X)
Vertex 2 SSD (system)
Vertex SSD 2 X 30GB RAID 0 (Games drive)
Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 850W Power Supply

If your in no rush hold out for the 6990/590 even if they arent quite the rocket ships people expect they will lower prices on the current top cards in both camps. If you must buy now the 5950 (unlocked) in crossfire is a bargain, whereas if money is no object the 580 in SLI is the fastest setup around.

How much did you get for your 5970? Just sold mine on the bay for £380, which if you ask me is a silly price for someone to pay - but I'll take the money :p

Its actually quite scary that the 5970 is classified as "old tech" now lol

Makes me feel like 4890 came out of the same factory as the wheel!

On the 560s they only have one SLI connector so three cards can't be run at once. Restricts people who want more than two cards to the pricier models.
