A little while ago I upgraded a few bits on my computer so the current specs for it are:

Q6600
Gigabyte Ds4 board
ATI 4850 1024mb
4gb RAM

I am running Xp, since upgrading the graphics card and processor, on some games i have been experienceing VPU recover a lot, on some games such as GRID it is almost instantly when starting a race.

From doing some research one of the reasons for it seems to be an underpowered PSU, i was running an ANTEX 550W PSU which i think was too low for what i was running. On a bit of an impulse buy at the weekend I got my self an 800W PSU although I think it was a bit of a cheap one, Atrix anyone?!

My googling doesnt seem to have provided me with any definate answers, does anybody have any input to what may be causing ATI to kick the bucket and resort to VPU all the time?

Thanks for any help!

Your ANTEC? 550W PSU should have been fine(assuming it wasn't faulty).

Can you tell us what model it is, Antec have made several 550w PSUs?

You system could be run on a good 450w PSU without issue.

Maybe change/reinstall the drivers.

I think overheating can cause this, especially if overclocked. I remember my old 9600Pro would VPU recover all the time, by the time I replaced it the fan was barely touching the core. Got decent airflow in your case? You could try using the manual fan controls to turn up the cooler and see if it resolves the issue.

Antec sorry. It was an Antec NEOPOWER 550W.

I have updated to latest drivers, something that occured to me, I never bothered unistalling old drivers before upgrading, how much does this matter?

I have looked at overheating and I don't think its the problem. I don't run the processor or GPU overclocked at all. I know my case isnt great (Antec sonata II) but have tried with side of case off and it doesn't seem to make too much difference. Also If I run ATI overdrive faclity to monitor temps the GPU doesn't seem to get too hot acording to that?

Could be the PSU, i would say uninstalling the drivers is worth a shot.

I ran a similiar spec but with a GTX260 and a dual core on an Antec 500 and it managed but i think it was on the edge of coping.

I'll give uninstalling and installing drivers a go. I've got side of case off and a 30cm fan on it at the moment and it is still going on so that may discount a heat problem.

Luke- Yes I know this but the PSU could be a cause to the graphics card resetting
