What computer upgrade has made you go WOW?

my computer hierarchy

weird tv system bat n ball thing>c16>zx spectrum 128k>c64>sega master system>amiga>pc

always been impressed with what had came next.

More long term but being on 56k dialup in 1999 to being on 50MB cable in 2009. Could download about 20MB an hour in 1999, can download 20GB an hour in 2009.

10 years and have a connection basically a thousand times faster...wondering what my upload/download speeds will be like in 2019.

I started off with an over priced built PC from some high street store. It was £500 and was bottom of the range celeron 1.7 with onboard 32mb gfx :(. Only just managed to play SOF1, but everything was on medium and low.

Then I built my first PC which was an AMD 3200+, 1gb ram, 6800GT. I also got HL2 at the same time to play on the new PC and i was gob smacked. I had never seen gfx like them after coming from a crap Pc and PS2 played on a TV.

I don't think I'll ever get that same wow factor again. I upgraded my PC to a quad core and GTX280 a while ago and played Crysis but I wasn't as impressed as i thought i was going to be.

The turbo button on my 8086 Amstrad lol

/edit also...

ti4600 -> x850xtx -> x1950xt -> GTX285

and... 25" CRT to 40" 1080p goodness

oh and... tape drive on BBC Micro to floppy.

Broadband, TFT and my 6800GT :)

Nothing has really blown me away recently, except my iPhone from some line of Samsung phones. Seeing Avatar in 3D moved me also.

The biggies for me were:

Onboard 2D > Voodoo2 12mb - OMG probably what got me the upgrade bug. No SLi for me though. :o

Naff 12" CRT > 19" PVA > 24" H-IPS - Each time I was taken aback by the quality difference and the huge amout of extra space.

Single > Dual core - Everything felt much snappier then a simple clock bump would suggest.

Generic speakers > Aego M's - I nearly died the first time I fired up a CD with them. Immediately went about getting a proper Hi-Fi afterwords. :D I added an X-Fi later and while it was better its was just not the same massive improvement.

HDD > SSD - Even coming from a VelociRaptor, the Vertex just blew it away. On in seconds and the desktop just there instantly for everything.

Optical mice - It was so nice for the cursor to reliably follow you at last.

56k dialup > 512k ADSL - I dont have to wait hours for a page to load and I dont tie up the phone line? Like, groovy man.

ATI Mach 64 -> Voodoo Graphics card
Crappy 14" Goldfish bowl CRT -> Sony G400 FD Trinitron 19" CRT

<7 years of nothing but a bit of evolution>

PC -> Mac
