What computer upgrade has made you go WOW?

Old school? When my Dad got us a new family PC. This one was 800MHz stock IIRC, and he overclocked it to 1GHz. Loads of people from his work came round as none of them had seen a PC running at 1GHz before. Was a proper nerdfest round our house!

Recently? SSD.

old laptop - pentium 3 mobile, 128mb ram, 10gb hdd, windows 98, ect to my current lappy :) which is as per sig

by my standards, thats fast ;) may add an SSD soon :P

also dial-up > broadband, could not believe what i'd been missing out on seeing as by dad only got it in 2004 :o

We'd got some of the first 3dfx cards in the country. Seeing Tombraider running on that, jaw dropping doesn't begin to describe it.:eek:

Nothing I've seen since, upgrade wise, has given the same sort of extreme actual noticable difference. Everything else has been just slow incremental advances. Yes even ssds.

My old laptop to my ultima viper, was like

Some ancient notebook graphics card > GTX 460
240gb hard drive > 1TB hard drive + 40GB SSD(boots in the blink of an eye, so sexy)
19" monitor that had problems > 23" samsung 1080p monitor
normal laptop speakers > 7.1 sony surround sound with mad bass
really old crappy processor > i7 950 overclocked to 4ghz
2GB RAM > 6GB RAM
broken laptop keyboard > razer lycosa (not initially, it had mad amounts of problems at first before some on this forum helped me <3)
mini microsoft notebook mouse > CM sentinel
normal looking HP pavilion > glowing blue antec case, glowing blue lycosa keyboard, glowing blue CM sentinel mouse, blue lights on my monitor, looks so sexy at night

the time when it really hit home was I reinstalled WoW after a long break, before I was running on 20-40 FPS on low graphics, no all of a sudden I'm on 150+ depending on the zone, also in the major cities where I would get <5fps I'd have about 30 which sounds bad but is unreal for that certain area.

Loving it, thanks OCuk :D

Quake 2 software mode to Voodoo 2 OpenGL mode
Quake 2 ping from modem to ISDN
Quake 2 frame rate from Voodoo 2 to Geforce1
Running crusher.dm2 timedemo in <5 seconds
Sharpness of pixels going from CRT to LCD
Playing an mp3 for the first time in Winamp
multicore support in Truecrypt.. :)

From my lovely old 1.73ghz dual core celeron laptop with 1gb ram, ati x800 graphics and an 80gb 5400rpm hard drive, with a 15.4" screen

To a 4.1ghz i7 860, 4gb ram, GTX460 overclocked to 900 core and a combo of 120gb Vertex 2e and a WD 500gb hard drive with a 23" monitor

I dont plan on waiting so long to upgrade next time!

BBC Model B - Cassette ----> 5.25" floppy
Oh ****me! I remember that!

I still recall showing off my 80track disc drive to my 40track owning scumbag unworthy friends..... :o:p:D:D:D

Acorn DFS to ADFS was quite a jump too.

Happy days..... :)

putting my old laptop hdd into my main rig literally an hour ago.. whole system has now stopped working.... FML!

Its probably trying to book off the lappy's HD causing a nice system screw up*

*I salvaged my sisters laptop's HD into a desktop PC and it does this from time to time.

I'm a regular upgrader so the small increments gained from this have never really made me go WOW! But the SNES, Amiga, Playstation and XBOX 360 have all made me go WOW because there was a huge leap between them. My most wowiest moment was when i first saw Wipeout running on a Playstation while out shopping. I walked straight up to the counter and bought one without even asking how much!

In 2007 going from my first system that was;

Amd sempron 1.6ghz & ati radeon 9550 to

Intel dual core E2140 2x 1.6ghz & ati radeon x1900xt

Was like WOAH :eek: playing bf2 and insurgency (half life 2 mod)!! No lag!!!

And then going from that to my current setup at the end of 2009;

Amd phenom II X4 B50 & ati radeon 5700

Was just like, WHAAAAT!!!! Although I think this upgrade was accentuated by the fact I went from a 17" TFT to my current 24" Benq widescreen monitor!

Going from a AMD Athlon x2 5200+ and 2x 8600gt's to a Phenom 2 555BE Unlocked and a ATI 4890

massive difference.

Going from an old ancient Dell machine to my built machine for gaming two and a half years ago. Dell could not play Half Life with everything set to low due to integrated graphics. From integrated graphics to 8800gts 512MB made a huge difference, I could actually play games on my PC.

My wow moments were moving from
a) 1.2 megabit internet connection to 37.5 megabits fibre optic
b) 80gb western digital raptor to 60gb OCZ SSD
c) 15in TFT to Dual 24in display
