What could i replace my car with?

Sounds like rubbish, unless all of the people he has meetings with are car nuts which is very unlikely.
"I can't see it and I have no experience of it, so it must be made up rubbish."

Read what I said. I have not implied it always happens or is anything other than an attitude change displayed by some people, yet you call it rubbish because you think 2 cars look the same. When you choose to analyse one component of someone’s post you often miss the context, as you have on this occasion. To imply I am making stuff up is a little disingenuous, don’t you think?

To clarify I don't doubt what you say at all, I was merely suprised as they look the same to a non car enthusiast. I worked with a few people on frankly ridiculous salaries when I was on placement, and even drove a few to various places and none of them could have been able to recall whether I had a 530 or an M5, which was the basis for said opinion.

Clearly though, you move in more clued circles!

I think I need to spell this out, I think the context has been missed.

It is about pier to pier comfort in many instances. People often prefer to work with people they feel they have things in common with, things such as cars, places they live, places they holiday, stuf they like, or all of them. My point is to make this judgement on ONLY these things, of which cars are one, is short sighted and stupid, as it is assuming a 25 year old can't afford a 911, a point I have made on many occasions.

I am talking about people who are making the call on spending millions with your company, something I suggest very few people on this forum have any experience of. Don't put to much focus onto peoples ability to make a call on the difference between an RS4 and and S-Line, it was used as an example not as a case study to be analysed.

Now, what was the question again?

Oh right, 730D then, though I think I said that. I am liking the helicopter idea mind!

I turn up to a meeting in my RS4 or GT3 and I often get a different attitude to when I turn up in my wifes S-Line. As a person or individual to deal with I am no different, therefore the person forming their view of me based on the metric of 'suit', 'watch', '£800 bag' or 'car' is flawed based on that case. Marketing is simply the management of image and perception of brand. I used to run a European PS business (and I know you offer such services), I am well aware of how important brand and image is, but look below the skin and you will often see its smoke and mirrors which is why using such criteria is often flawed.
<offtopic>A philosphical point, not a pragmatic one.</offtopic>

Also, a 20K 996 is asking for trouble, though if you are lucky a very solid call.
Who likes the quiet life? :p

This thread has pretty much run a course and come full circle. The S is about as good as it gets, the Jag a viable alternative. I'd still have the 911 though, warts, dodgy engine and all.

Big advantage of the 7-series over the S from a maintenance POV is the fact that you can buy them with sprung suspension. The only part of my car which is giving me real issues is lack of pressure in the airmatic system (air leaks from the struts which are nearing 100k miles) and im losing my patience with it fast! The struts are £750 each part only too from GSF, so thats a £2000 job to get the rear pair replaced, and thats before i think about doing the fronts.

My e38 broke its rear springs twice in the 2 years I owned it - thankfully, paid for by BMW as the springs were replaced by them just prior to me buying the car.

Air suspension belongs in trucks, not cars. ;):D

OP - why is auto so important if you are spending so much time cruising on the motorway? with a decent engine under the bonnet these cars will still pull well enough in top gear.

E39 M5 - you dont really need 1st gear, 2nd gear, even 3rd, is adequate for pulling away in. once you are on the motorway leave it in 5th or 6th.

just a thought. :)

I just dont really like manuals as much, i spend a lot of time mooching around city centres visiting clients, a lot of time in traffic, and even day to day i just prefer automation - much like i prefer electric windows to manual ones.

I would make an exception for an M5, but the insurance is *insane* on the M-series cars for me :( (22, 1NCB, High mileage, business use)

Funnily enough, I don't think any of our customers have ever seen any of our cars or are the least bit interested. Guess that's what happens when you supply to public sector workers...

also, petrol heads in "top level" circles are just uncommon as everywhere else.

a couple of people I know just walk into a car showroom and buy the top of the range car of that particular model.

£20k would get you a pretty tidy Turbo R, awesome motorway cruiser that'd be. You should have enough change left to get new wiper blades and valve caps and stuff. Fuel might be a bit of an issue but I'm sure at a steady cruise you'd get 10mpg or so.

Ouch! A frightening purchase but what way to blow the cash!

Got to be a 2003-2004 XJR as suggested by others.

£20k for a 4 year old luxury saloon that does 0-60 in 5 secs despite an autobox, is reliable, smooth, comfortable and has an awesome interior.

And looks as near as makes no difference exactly the same as the 95 XJR's you'll see for £5k.

So buy a cheap one. An M reg one drove past me today and I couldn't beleive it was 12 years old. It had '54' on the plate I'd not have questioned it.
