What could i replace my car with?

Audi A8 4.0/4.2 (age dependant) V8 TDI. The old man drives one and its truely epic. VERY fast when you want - I've raced and clattered a Rover Sport off the lights 4 up in it - and a very comfy relaxing cruiser when you want. Electric everything, understated, quiet. A true great as far as I'm concerned.

Having said all that if you have a reliable 99 S Class that you got for a song then keep that and run it into the ground whilst saving for a replacement. New RS6 aren't that long off.............;)

Oh I dunno...you might like them? Jez opened a thread saying "suggest me a car" so therefore it was suggested.

I knew the chances of him considering one, was exceedingly slim, but the suggestion was there nonetheless!

I dont dislike saab's, but do they even make a large one? They all seem quite small and unsuited to high mileage when compared with motorway cruisers like S-class'/A8/7-series' etc.

Why would you like them, especially over there competition? Come on, defend your point and brand like a man. Saab's do fit the criteria it would seem, I think it was a fair suggestion, just one that is guna be dismissed if what people say about them is true.

Not massively large like the S'class but the 9-3 saloon and 9-5 saloon are both good sized cars. All depends on what you have to carry and how much, do you often fill up your car?

If anything the Saab's are built for Motorway munching, quiet, VERY comfortable, I'm not to up to speed on the latest models but the engines in general have good torque through-out the entire rev-range so you get good pull at most speeds. They will quite happily sit at 70-80 all day long on the motorway. Thing is, second hand - you get a lot of car for your money.

I very nearly sold mine for an updated 53' reg 9-3 Saloon for £4-5k as it only had 30k on the clock but it had been in a flood so worried about internal electrics.

The audio systems in them are good quality and you don't need to be a brainiac to work in the inbuilt computers either.

My arguement in these situations is you do get an awful lot of car for your money, the newer ones are much better on fuel than mine is (that's understandable due to technology blah blah blah) and just because you have £20k doesn't mean you have to spend it. :)

Take one for a test drive, you may like it! :p

Why does my Mum's Mum buy a brand new Daewoo every single bleedin' year? :p

A lot of people do shout and say "it's just a rebranded Vectra" - ok, fair enough - Sauce? Then typically, everyone jumps on the band-wagon.

Because the quality of leather used on the interior may be ever so slightly lower than that used in a Bimmer or Merc - doesn't make them a bad car at all. Like I said above, you get an awful lot of car for your money, and they will literally sit on the motorway all day long without complaints. Apart from running costs and 1 thing (which was an original designers fault) my car hasn't cost me a penny on owning it. I think I remember Sam saying his Bimmer for the first 3 months of owning it cost him something like £800 a month!

With respect they make nothing which would be even close to something in the exec class from what i can see, its the wheelbase and suspension technology that dictates how well a car cruises, and without test driving one i know that a little saab will be miles under par really. Thanks for the suggestion all the same though, all are welcome :)

The £20k thing was just an artificial limit which seems fairly sensible and not too excessive, if a car was £25k instead that would be fine, if it were what i wanted.

Really Fox is correct in that i might as well keep it, and consider something silly to go next to it. But then i go back to Hosuemasters valid point about the A/B car thing, if i had something silly i'd probably end up using that all the time.

That's fair enough dude :) - It's not particularly what you're after.
That's cool !

 The convertible would be awesome, no i dont need any space, the only reason i have a 4-door at the moment is due to them being cheaper than the CL/SL.

Liking that very much scuzi, and something i hadnt thought of

They are beautiful cars. One of my neighbours has an XKR coupe and I always crane my neck when walking past it, it never gets old.

This one really depends on what you do for a living actually, and the nature of your customers. In the corporate world a cheap car can damage your credibility with many people, stupid though that may be, it is a fact in many sectors. Pull up for dinner with a C club member of a multi national in a £10K rep mobile or old banger and you'd be amazed how attitudes change. People, at this level, take comfort from dealing with people who they percieve to be like them more often than not. I have seen many examples of this over the years and yup, I know its stupid.
It's not stupid at all, it's marketing. In many professional services where confidence and quality are converting factors people buy into people, hence the suit. Cars are the same.

My £20k buys:

There are a few problems with the 996, as much as i'd love one:

- I'd only want a C4, after test drives i would kill myself in a RWD model, after being in a fair few crashes and splitting my last fast car in half i think i can judge fairly well what cars i would be stupid to buy.

- I'd want one with the GT3/Aero kit (whatever its called). After looking at them semi seriously ive decided that you need between £25k and £30k for a half decent 996, and while thats fine, and its what id spend, i dont really want to have that much money in a car which will be getting miles piled onto it all day.

- They are crap on the motorway, which is where i spend my life, which makes them a "B" car only.

You own the worlds best Motorway wafter.

Stop being daft.

what he said...

after reading the thread you have dimissed just about every car and moaned about the fuel economy on anything half decent.

The only car ive said wont be economical enough is a V8 Range Rover, if the quoted figures were accurate.
