i just bought this mobo :-

Asus M4A785D-M Pro AMD 785G (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

//http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-357-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1484

i'm going to be using new build for blu ray / hd dvd mostly with the odd bit of light gaming ... mostly old titles

this mobo takes a wise selection of cpu ... so should i go dual / tri or quad cpu ?

i dont want to spent crazy money , but want to make sure i have enough grunt

any advice woudl be great

hmm well i dont want any heat issues ... this mwedia centre will have to last me a good few years .. my days of uprageds every 12 months are well over

Ignore - I misread.

As to your OP - I think the X3 720BE is a brilliant CPU at an equally brilliant price. However, I would give this CPU a look (P2 X4 955) - as it is one of the fastest gaming CPUs around and is going for a great price these days.

+1 for this. If you're on a tight budget get the 720, it wont disappoint, but if you can stretch to it i'd highly recommend the 955. Its on offer at the moment and well worth it.

well gaming wont be my top priority .. thats why i picked this particular board as its got the most up to date onboard graphics

Im going to say the P2 955. Awesome AMD power and very future proof for the foreseeable future proof. You took the plunge to use an AM3 platform so i think you should optimally utilise this to your advantage and go all out quad.

The P2 955 this week is still on offer. Snap it up at a bargain £145.

lol i might have got it if i had the cash ... but a new girlfriend is makign me hold out on the readies :) so its going to have to wait a month .

it might be a good cpu but thats abit more cash than i envisaged paying... was looking at £100 max ... but we will see whats available then ... but good to know my options :)

Another vote for the 720BE here, you should be able to unlock it to get 4 cores too - not to mention some overclocking fun :) You could consider the X2 550BE also if price is a major concern, that can also be unlocked to a quad-core very easily, but the X3 720BE is not much more and the stock 3 cores will perform very well for you :)
