What cpu paste is recommended

PK-3 most recently. Not sure why people use AS Silver still. It's decades old and crap in contemporary times.

For me one of the reasons is it is tried and tested - I know I can stick it on and it will last years and years performing exactly as expected - which hasn't been my experience (directly or indirectly) with some of the newer (often hyped) pastes*. Also when applied correctly, a lot of people but especially pertinently reviewers keep insisting in applying it incorrectly (sometimes wrapping that up in doing it for "fairness" and "consistency" by using the same method for all pastes - but that isn't a fair comparison when some are designed to work with different methods), it will get close to the latest and greatest pastes.

Also something which skews a lot of reviews of it is that those older pastes often require about multiple heat cycles to reach peak performance while most newer pastes don't - MX-6 for instance performs exactly the same from first power on to the nth heat cycle - but again reviewers keep insisting on testing "for consistency" without taking that into account - albeit I somewhat sympathise as it adds a lot of additional time to testing but still.

* There are 1-2 hyped to the heavens pastes which will give impressive results for 1-2 years but then dry out and performance drops off a cliff - which is great I guess if you are looking for extreme overclocks and/or breaking WRs but not great for a system you want running relatively maintenance free for years.

To me it's somthing massively overrated, unless your going to be doing some overclocking it shouldn't affect it that much. From memory most compounds only have a few degrees difference?

In a nominal situation there is often very little in it - not the whole story though for instance if the surfaces of the IHS and heatsink aren't a great match in terms of concave/convex, etc. different pastes can make a bigger difference and so on.

If shooting for a world record it can also make all the difference but yeah for everyday use there is a lot less in it.
