What design criteria do toaster designers use?

The toaster in this house doesn't even fit a slice of Hovis without it sticking out the top :( How do they even get away with selling these? It would be like selling a keyboard with the space bar and vowels missing.

i think they find the smallest loaf of bread available, then see if that fits, it it does, they have a product fit for purpose:D

English bread is big. In Norway the bread is smaller and fits perfectly :p

So maybe it's designed to fit those kinda countries and not England.

Serious.

Well whoever designed your toaster (pics, btw) clearly didn't cater for your needs. Just buy one that does.

Why is this even a thread? Just buy a new toaster. Unbelievable.

[FnG]magnolia confirmed for taking it way to seriously. :p

My concern with toasters these days aren't even if the bread fits or not. The worst are those that after the default time, you go check and see it's underdone so you put it back in for 30 seconds. Come back and it's burnt to a crisp.

At least two inches of bread has to be open from the toaster for health and safety reasons as it does not pass quality control and cannot be sold in the UK. If the mechanistic of the toaster does not follow these rules for standard toast that is approx 12x13cm then the toaster has to be re-designed to fit the UK Standards of Toasters (UK ST).

I wondered this myself, and when looking into the research it is quite interesting how much work is involved as regards to the design, size and the mechanics of the toaster when they are made. When the development of heat-resistant plastics came out, this offered more options for toaster design. Models with rounded sides in a variety of colors became popular. Wider slots for bagels and thick slices of bread also appeared, as well as models with up to six slots for multiple toasting.

Since then the toast has to be peeking out from the toaster slightly as if it goes any lower into the toaster and touches the heating element and catches fire within the toaster then it can cause a lot of issues.

On a serious note.
