What Did You Get In Your GCSE's?

9 A*s (German, French, Drama, Geography, English Language/Literature, Electronics, double Science) and 3 As (Latin, Stats and Maths).

They helped in the immediate future for getting in to sixth form/university, but I can't say I've thought much about them since. I don't particularly remember revising hard, but I must've done a fair bit of work - my big lull came mid A-levels, followed by a few months of manic study before the exams

...Actually, I hit another big slump in university too, but that's getting off topic.

I managed to get a smattering, (R.E., Maths, English Lit, English Lang, Physics, Chemistry, Computing Science, Electronics, CDT, History & French).

Helped get the A-Level courses I wanted at 6th form, I haven't listed them explicitly before now since applying for 6th form.

They're a good basis for determining if you are any good at applying yourself to something for a couple of years and regurgitating what you know under some pressure...but they mean next to nothing. Moreover for subjects such as Physics and Chemistry especially, you'll spend the first bit of the equivalent A-Level undoing a lot of the damage done as the simplistic models used for GCSE are replaced with the more complex models required for A-Level (and the same again for the leap from A-Level to degree).

But GCSEs are a snapshot in time, and they do a good job at ranking people.

I would disagree, so many people get great grades at GCSE that ranking them based on those grades is increasingly futile.

Bring back O Levels, that will separate the men from the boys so to speak.

I can't remember all my grades, but I did 12 or 13 GCSEs, can't remember it was 1/2 a lifetime ago Purely because I took French early (13) so had the chance to do another one instead. I got a couple of Cs I think, and the rest were Bs with some As too. Clearly I got an A* for French.

In year 11 at the moment but already managed to nab myself an A* in statistics and core science, an A in Media and a B in IT

My GCSEs effected my ability to do my A Levels but I'm not sure they matter much now. Having a decent Maths and I.T. grade probably doesn't look too bad on a CV though, even if I can't remember a single thing I learnt.

I didn't do too badly I guess, I didn't really try though when I look back on it. Not quite sure why, but discovering alcohol might have had something to do with it

B's in Math and Art, C's in English, Science (double), Geography and French. E in R.E thought it was a huuuge waste of time IMO.

Four As, Six Bs in 1997.

Enabled me to do the A-levels I wanted. There were other options though, like apprenticeships, and I had no idea what I wanted to do in life.

Therefore I didn't pin any aspirations on what my grades needed to be; I just wanted to do as well as possible. However, I didn't revise effectively or anything - I was very easily distracted (as is any 15/16 year old boy).

Let me do A-Levels, which let me do my Degree.

Enabled me to do my A-levels, then degree and then get a decent graduate job.

Doing well will never disadvantage you and a consistent record helps you too.

There are always 1000s of other things to be doing instead of revising, but it's worth it.

I did my French a year early and god knows how how I managed a C in Spanish as I was too busy building pencil towers and having pen fights to care!

I went on to get a C in Product Design and a C in Philsophy and Ethics at A-Level. I got my placement at Uni via interview which I ended up with a conditional which then changed to unconditional at the last minute. This was 3-4 years ago and from what I've heard things are a bit tighter now.

I do wish I'd worked a little harder instead of watching Family Guy when I was supposed to be revising, however I'm still pleased with how I did.

Yes if I could go back knowing what I know now I would have tried harder but I really didn’t start learning anything until after I left school then my thirst for knowledge seem to explode!

Oh well, live and learn I guess.

Whilst separating the brightest may be difficult or people of close ability, the argument was that it still does a good job of discovering who is smart and who isn't, i.e. a smart person doing worse than someone who isn't anywhere near as smart as them is very unlikely.

This depends on how you define being "smart" surely, if you think someone is "smart" just because they can remember facts and figures and then recall them in a test then you are correct if however you think someone is not "smart" because they are creative and practical or maybe fall apart in exam situations then you are wrong.

EDIT: I'm not entirely sure my reply makes sense so I am going to label myself as not smart and leave now...
