what do i do, which CPU ?

i've just checked on Google, the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 940 Black is AM2+......it cant go on an AM3 mobos mentioned above, and it doesn't support DDR3 either...is this correct?

thanks.

Yes.

AM3 CPU goes into AM3, AM2 or AM2+ motherboads
AM2/2+ CPU goes into AM2+ or AM2 motherboards, but not AM3 motherboards.

Get either the 720 or 955 :-)

If you're contemplating spending more than 3/4 months waiting for the next component, just buy whatever's out now. If the next gen kit is geniunely soon, you may aswell get the best for your money if you can wait... but each generation is really not that much better day to day than the last, any more than a few months and you're just wasting time.

My 720BE is several generations ahead of my P4 3gHz, but it wouldn't have been worth waiting 3 years for that performance difference, and been stuck with a Pentium II in the meantime.

Way I see it, if youre onlly gonna complete your build at whatever time, theres no point buying parts until then. You will get better things for cheaper.

Like me, I plan on putting together a PC in August. So I wont buy any parts until the end of August cos thats when I have the time to do it. Why buy parts now and then moan when you see how much prices have dropped come August time?

yea' and i've got to waste 50 quid replacing my current PSU....that would've got me the Antec 300 case for my next build

prices are dropping fast ( cpu/ram/mobo) so there's no way that i'm buying anything till Xmas ..... all i'm doing now is researching/homework, i've a lot to learn, cause i've never built a rig before, hence i'm here annoying the regulars :D:D

my guess is this new phenom 965.... will be a standard upgrade on the 955, and will have maybe 3 diff versions all based on this one, but only overclocked more

3.4
3.6
3.8 at Xmas

by then the standard 965 3.4GHz will be dirt cheap and the one to go for... just OC this one to 4.2.....if poss.... or 3.8.... and this new one might only be a 955 in clever disguise, you know; a few tweeks here and there :D:D

whatever the case, i definitely aint buying an INTEL, i've always had Athlon ever since Win 95 ;)

Well top of the range performance is still held by Intel, I mean, none of these Phenoms can compare to the i7 as it stands. But you will be paying a lot more for that, so AMD is definitely the one giving you bang for buck atm.

.. there is still a gap, but it's reducing fast and might not be there in two weeks time......but we're not sure yet.

but this gap is definitely not worth the extra expense for Intel i7 ...not at 400 to 800 quid. this is where Intel have a huge problem.... ...because they do not have enough speed/ power advantage over an overclocked 955, to warrant this ridiculous price tag.

the i7 3.3 ``extreme edition`` should be about 300 quid, but definitely not 800 quid.

Intel will need to drop their prices and pretty quick too.

and dont forget Athlon have Fusion/ bulldozer comming out within one to two years...Atlon have turned the corner in the last 6 months, and Intel have to be a bit careful from now on.... they're looking too elitist, especially during a worldwide recession!

Lol I saw that £800 chip and could not understand how something smaller than my palm and not made of DIAMONDS could cost that much. That is truly crazy pricing.

yea' it's crazy.... i'm quite excited about my new pc, i dont mind waiting a year.
i'll get the case/ corsair 850/ hard drives/storage first...and then nothing more till next july!.... but i might get the CPU at Xmas...

last of all will be the Card... because the GTX 295, will definitely be outdated by then.... maybe outdated two times over by new DX11 cards... so only a fool would buy card/ mobo now.

Meh you can always say that. If youre gonna use a PC now, buy it now. If yorue gonna wait, you can keep on waiting really. I mean how many games even use DX 10 right now never mind DX11 games.

Things are always getting cheaper and newer things are always coming out. Its never gonna be a perfect time to buy parts.
