What do you do for a living and why do you enjoy it or dislike it?

Financial Administrator

Like: the town i work in is close to my friends, the people i work with are great, a lot of social functions

Dislike: the job is more boring than anything you could ever compare it with, middle management and company infrastructure is completely borked, company has no interest in your career development (even though they say they do), idiot salespeople, lack of motivation/direction, too much responsibility/not enough cash

Part time Sales Consultant at Carphone Warehouse

Likes: It's good pay for the hours when you take commission into account, get on with everyone well, good staff discounts. Ooh and don't have to start till 12 at the earliest.

Dislikes: Bit stressful as we have to keep to sales targets every day and if we don't meet them we get called up to explain why we didn't, decent pay's not always a certainity because it's commission based. Irate customers.

Quick question about these guys as I have an interview with them on Friday...

Are you expected to update your own phone every few months or so or do they heavily subsidise contracts/new models for you as long as you work there?

if they're anything like when i worked there, they dont care how old your phone is. if you have a crap phone, it's your problem

LoL funniest thing I've heard today. Of course they dont expect you to keep updating your phone! I work in IT but they dont expect me to get a new PC every few months.

job: detail designer/draughtsman/architectual technician

Like: The lads in the drawing office and my manager are a good laugh. Pretty laid back atmosphere.

Dislike: Everything that goes wrong with a job is blamed on the drawing office

Job: Software Developer

Likes: Creating digital life, every job different.

Dislikes: The state of the industry today, full of theory based methods/twonks instead of hard graft.

I tell them everyday! :D

Job : Editor of an online car/motoring magazine & accompanying blog.

Like: Because it's part of my job to sit around reading Top Gear and Car and surfing motors forums and blogging. Test driving nice new motors.
Love writing too so that helps :)
Small office, great lads, get to read all the contributions and submissions that come in and encourage people to get writing for me and build up their confidence. Also getting to see some truly fantastic photos.
Also only work in office few hours a day the rest I do from home so don't have to leave my doggy alone for too long :D

Dislike: Not so much a dislike just the other side of the coin. Can get very pressurised and heavy going at times, and have to be oh so careful where copyright and editorial content is concerned.

Job: Self Employed - Install Computing & AV "Stuff" in homes and for small businesses.

Like: Almost everything, loads of free cups of tea/coffee. Meet loads of different people. Own manager etc...

Dislike: It has taken over my life (most of the time this isnt a bad thing though as I love it!)

Job: Accounts administrator/IT "looker-after"

Likes: I work for a garage - I get to see the technicians invent the latest version of "Fireball" or jam the newest apprentice inside a load of tyres and roll him out onto the main road. Naked girl calendars everywhere!

Dislikes: I have to do all their IT stuff for which they keep promising to pay me. Job is otherwise boring.

Job: Fitness instructor who also does classes (pilates, aerobics, cardio kickbox, boxercise, circuits and soon yoga) inductions and personal training.

Like: Everything. I get to meet really amazing people and boost their confidence. It gives me a real lift to see them leaving happy.

Dislike: Am so busy I never have time for lunch!

  • On an average 8 hour shift I would work for 4-5 hours and spend the rest watching TV and drinking coffee
  • Excellent perks - cheap flights, free upgrades, jumpseat rides etc...
  • We work as a close team - Lots of banter makes the day even better
  • Morale is always high

Dislikes

Makes 3 of us I count so far.

Bullit in head, how much are guys earning now? If you don't mind me asking. As I work with a few ex BR guys on LU and they were on a pittance compared to what we got back then.

And pay increase looks like 3.4% but unions trying to renegotate.

I need to find a way to work up the company, trying to get on the part time sheffield uni course.

I'm too lazy :D Plus I love my job too. I might look into doing it at weekends and evenings when I've done my run for Cancer Research. Always seemed to be a really rewarding thing to do, seeing people get fitter and happier, and of course, you're always on the 'go' too :)

Yup! I've discovered that often the best way to motivate people is to get them to keep up with me so I get my workout at the same time.
