what do you do on linux?

I'm using xubuntu on a file and print server at the moment using samba and cups. It works great and it only took me around 3 or 4 hours to set up which impressed me since I'd never used any flavour of linux before and I had to fiddle with a lot of config files.

I still use XP on my desktop though but that's purely because I game occasionally/use it as a music studio for my band/dabble in photoshop. I probably can do these things in linux (apart from gaming) but I already invested a good few years learning how to do them on Windows and though I'd like to be able to do them on linux, I don't know what the support/stability is like on there so I'll stick to what I know.

If I didn't run these programs I'd defo use linux as my main OS. I'm considering putting it on my ancient laptop cuz it'll probably boot up faster than XP does. I'll get round to it eventually :D

I have two Desktops and a PC. My High spec has Vista and is used for games only.

All my other day to day computing is done in Linux. I use Kubuntu on my other desktop as I prefer the KDE desktop.

On my laptop I have Mint because it has good wireless support which was relatively easy to setup. It's also fairly light on software, it comes with 1 browser, 1 email client etc, unlike most distributions that come with several alternatives. The laptop is mostly used by the girlfriend for the Internet so I just wanted something that worked with minimum fuss and Mint does this well.

I tried Linux just to find out what it was all about and preferred it to Windows. I like whole idea of open source software, it's all free, uses less system resources than windows and is highly customizable.

I've got myself Ubuntu 7.10 working perfectly, however im stumped as to what to do on it! I installed it for the novelty of being able to say i use Linux, however so far it just seems a little more basic compared to ms windows, for starters i can't game on linux and video quality is a bit dodgy too and thats without talking about the lack of support! So what advantages are there from it?

I'm using it for my job to learn about Linux system/network administration. Things like TCP/IP and Samba that I wouldn't normally mess about with on Windows, also you could be learning about C programming and things like Bash scripting if file sharing bores you. There's also stuff like MySQL if you want to do database administration or PHP/Python/Perl if you want to do LAMP.

You should try replicating your Windows skills on Linux before dismissing it for stuff to do. That should give you an idea on the next level to approach whether stuff like programming or network/user support.

Office work, presentations, acounting

Watching movies, listening to music
Indeed my entire PhD is only possible becuas eof linux really.
Basic gaming (I have a Wii for serious stuff)

What do I use windows for?
Used ot for gaming but not anymore. Its useable for multimedia stuff, but has no advantages so no need to boot into windows and put up with hours of upgrades just to play some music.
I use Adobe illustrator someitmes in windows.
