What do you do with your old hardware?

My new PC I built last year was my first rig in about 8 or so years, so my old PC was binned.

It was an Athlon 2500XP, NF7-S, 9800 Pro etc; pretty much useless today. It stopped working early last year and it was just gathering dust.

I'm looking to upgrade some parts in a couple of months so i'll be selling anything still of value (Case/RAM/GFX).

I always give it to friends and family who need an upgrade. I tried selling a cpu once cause it was a real good overclocker, but when it arrived at the guys house he said it was DOA so that put me off ever trying to sell stuff again.

Everything always has a use for me since I do a lot of web and media work.

When the main rig was replaced she became a dedicated Windows XP test bed. The old server still runs Windows 2000 Advanced Server and a fairly new XAMPP so I practice Apache config and Windows Domain and DNS management on it.

Even have a Pentium III up and running, mainly because it's funny to assemble a system out of spare parts that would've cost thousands brand new (1GHz P3 EB, 1.5GB PC1333 RAM, ATI Rage Fury Pro). May turn it into a retro gaming box.

And pretty much anything that could have a DVD Burner plugged into it does/can have at least 1 available if I need to do DVD duplication runs.

I keep some bits and then sell others.

I have kept my old GPU and PSU as they are handy to have for testing issues with PCs as they are not easy parts to come by if I need to confirm a faulty/

sold my old CPU, Motherboard and ram

Passed down to my son,

His rig has my 300R, 8GB RAM, SSD, HDD, KB&M, FX8320, MOBO & OS.

When I upgrade my GTX 780 to a 390X or 980Ti etc he will get that. Then I'll sell his R9 270X and buy him a Steam voucher.

How come they've made it you have to post 1000posts before you can get in the buying/selling section?

To ensure there's no dodgy people or dodgy dealings going on. This forum is a community and regular, active members are known quantities so inherently have a higher level of trust.

Although personally I'd say 1,000 posts is far too high. I may not be super active but I've been around for years, yet I'm nowhere near the post count. I don't even think I get free shipping either (although I just live down the road from the shop so that's not a big deal).

Sell it or donate it my mum's PC for an upgrade. Always nice to have some reasonable hardware when I visit. She's got no clue about any of it of course so long as she can email her friends she's happy. Graphics card next I think...

I always sell components separately rather than as a complete PC theres more money in it that way I find, and cases unless they're Lian Li or some such aren't worth much anyway and usually cost a small fortune in delivery charges so usually end up heading for the council tip.

Also OCuk take no cut from the money exchanged I believe so loyal forum members with high post counts are more likely to have purchased from OCuk in the first place, I imagine.

Exactly i've been a member since 2010 and been ordering from them since 2006 i think it was. Supposed its just not meant to be :P

I'll pass old parts on to my family generally if I don't need them. That way they at least have a semi-quick PC to perform their work on, which I don't think would otherwise be the case.

Frustratingly enough, there always seems to be 51%(*) of a pc lying around, which begs the question - why not finish it off?

* 51% could mean 6 fans, a psu and a sticker.

I've been on this forum for 10 years and I don't have enough post count to get in it either :( also I always buy my kit from OcUK because they're just down the road :P
