What do you keep your equipment in?

Actually this thread has got me thinking a bit. When I go camping I normally keep my camera gear inside an Alpkit Gourdon (basically a waterproof drysack with straps) inside my main backpack. The Gourdon doubles as a basic daysack, but has absolutely no internal compartments and I end up with all my gear bouncing around inside in their individual pouches etc.

Does anyone know of something like the F-stop ICU (but cheaper !) that would fit inside a 20l daypack? As lightweight as possible really while still providing some protection for m43 sized kit.

Might call for a DIY project I guess.

mine are spread out, rucksack, set of draws built into the wardrobe etc.

Just an FYI, and something I have seen a few times over the last few years, keeping all your camera gear in a bag/rucksack is asking for trouble if you get a burglar, you've already wrapped them all up for them to take.

Already way ahead of you, attach the entire case with a bike lock to the radiator or big piece of furniture...

Of course, that means you need a case, and not a bag in the first place.

Partly why my stuff is scattered around a little.

you really think that will stop them from stealing it? infact that would entice an burgular MORE in stealing it as they know u MUST have soomething valuable inside!

Currently scattered around my desk and dining table where I've been too busy (read lazy) to put it all away :p

I keep my lenses and filters in an organised drawer in a sideboard unit in the lounge and I bought as soft drawer rubber 'liner' from Ikea so nothing gets scratched. My flashes and accessories in the smaller drawer next to it and assortment of bags, tripods, reflectors, soft box and other nonsense in the cupboard below.

I have two main photo bags that live in the office with my bodies and chargers, so will tend to just grab the bare minimum I'll need for what I'm going to shoot and head out. Fills me with dread to see a 40kilo backpack with everything in it..shudder. The amount of people I see out and about carrying (what seems) like their entire collection of gear amazes me!

the intention is to make it more difficult, they would need to go and find something to cut for a start. Most burglars go in and out fast, not come in with bolt cutters.

I do the same in hotels. What else should I do? Lay it all over the bed and let house keeping take it or chain it and they would need to cut it?

But either way, it's all insured.

Have a look on the river website, search for camera insert or camera partition and there are a few options. This is what I've been considering for storage, a cheap travel hardcase and some inserts to keep the gear in.

just keep it in a simple bag of choice somewhere not visible so easily.

sorted.

no need to chain it up

Yeah thanks I spotted a couple of potential things after posting. I think I've found a better solution however; my gf and her sewing machine :p

I would need about 3 bags!

And there is no way anyone could grab a pelican case that size and jump over garden fence. Lol

When we were burgled last (thankfully over ten years ago now) the police told us that they much prefer to steal easily concealable items so they walk away without raising any suspicion. Watches, cash, jewellery etc. Even though I had (at the time) a big home cinema set-up, none of that was taken.

So now we have a concealed safe where the easily taken items can be stashed if not taken. Other than that, just keeping stuff out of sight is good enough.
Oh, and insurance.
