What does everyone think about the Ye Shiwen swimming performance?

It's a bit suspicious that she was so fast in the final leg which would mean she was just pacing herself over the first 3 legs, she could have probably smashed the world record by several seconds if she had gone flat out without tiring too much towards the end.

We'll have to see if she can maintain the pace in the future and not fail any drugs test, until then you just have to admire her performance.

Passing a test and actually being clean aren't the same thing. ;)

yes, ask Marion Jones!

I wouldn't be surprised if she is a drugs cheat. Partially based on her "surprising" performance, and partially based on the fact that China has had a lot of recent problems with drug use.

I would however be very surprised if they catch her. I would imagine she is unlikely to still be taking anything AT the Olympics. And they will have probably worked out a regime that leaves her free of all traces by the time she arrived in London.

"The big question is over the way Ye swam in the last 50m, that's what we're all finding a little bit difficult to take in. But Becky Adlington's last 50m of the 800m was also quicker than Lochte's, so we have to be careful that we don't jump to ridiculous conclusions.

you all gonna call adlington a doper now too?

ian thorpe was smashing record times at the chinese youngsters age. deal with it

That's just sensationalism, she swam the last leg (of 8) faster than Lochte because she paces herself differently over the 400m. Would your eyebrow still be raised to know she is actually 23 seconds slower (4:28.43) than Lochte (4:05.18) overall and 15 seconds behind the 8th placed male (4:14.89) in the final?

Also all medallist are tested and samples held for 8 years for further testing.

Just sore losers from the American coach.

Just thought I'd point out that the comparison with Lochte isn't strictly 'fair' in the sense that it may not be a like for like comparison i.e. maybe Lochte caned it in the first 50m of that leg and then was tiring/eased off for the second 50m. Rather selective statistic chosen I feel.

Consider this, she won her race with a winning margin of under 3s, compared to Lochte's margin of 3.68s. So Lochte didn't need to go any faster, he was already annihilating the competion by MORE than Ye Shiwen. In fact in percentage terms his margin of victory relative to his time is even more dominant that that suggests, 3.68/245.18 (over 1.5%) compared to 2.84/268.43 (~1.06%).

Tell you what boys, this Lochte fella, looks well fishy to me :((((((

OF course that doesn't mean to say that it is all above board but you've gotta be careful when people start manipulating the stats, cherry-picking segments to try and illustrate their point etc.

Thanks guys, half truths from the media. Irritating to say the least.

Yeah regardless of whether or not she has a case to answer, the media are not doing themselves any favours in my eyes by plucking these random segments out of the air(water). As soon as I see someone having to resort to something so specific, it sets alarm bells ringing, it makes me think "the normal, broader stats clearly don't illustrate their point, so they are having to pick a tiny fraction of the full picture and then make an out of context comparison". As somebody else pointed out, over the whole race she wasn't even remotely in the same class as the worst swimmer in the men's final, so I went and looked at the qualifying rounds as well. There were five men's heats and she was slower than every single swimmer in four out of the five qualification heats never mind the final. Now, the fact that she was slower than men doesn't prove that she's not on something, but what it does show is how ridiculous the comparison with the final segment of one of Lochte's races (which he dominated) is.

It's like saying oh, some horse ran the final furlong faster than Red Rum in year X, HMMMMMMM SUSPICIOUS. But maybe in year X Red Rum had a massive lead and was just coasting at the end.

It's an interesting topic that's for sure. As EdwardTeach said, if she has been using performance enhancing drugs and substances, I think the coaches/government etc will have ensured there is definitely no trace in her system anymore.

This is a great point. It most definitely is a media hand picking stats completely out of context.

End of the day, if she has indeed passed the drugs test, chances are we will unfortunately never know if something was fishy with the performance.

I can't imagine how she's feeling amid this media frenzy and all the sour grapes.
What a fantastic effort. Exactly the sort of thing which makes the Olympics exciting.

The media has to be so bloody negative the whole time. As for the pundits and coaches who were quick to point fingers before any testing, shame on you.

I just reckon it's people whinging that "They're faster than me so they must be cheating".

I'm currently working for the company that's doing all the dope testing (in something completely unrelated though!), and from what I've heard it's all pretty thorough and clever stuff they're doing in the tests. If someone is on something, they'll be caught.

When you think that a lot of Chinese athletes are hot housed from toddler age aiming for world domination in sports, it shouldn't really come as a shock. For me far, far less surprising than what Usain Bolt has accomplished.
