What does the pinnacle of android gaming look like?

Here you go gents, a theoretical performance guide for each device gpu. It's not particularly accurate but gives a good indication of general capabilities, feel free to chastise ;)

*ohhh look, my phone does neat 3D graphics!*
Desire (Adreno 200) = 1 GFLOP
iPhone 4/Motorola Droid 2 (SGSX 530/535) = 2 GFLOPS
xPeria play (Adreno 205) = 2-3 GFLOPS
SGS (SGX 540) = 3-5 GFLOPS
LG Optimus 2X (Tegra 2) = 3-5 GFLOPS
HTC Sensation (Adreno 220) = 3-6 GFLOPS

*Cool, wonder if it compares to a console?*
SGS2 (Mali 400) = 8-10 GFLOPS?
iPad 2 (SGX543mp2) = 12-20 GFLOPS
PS Vita (SGX543mp4) = 25-40 GFLOPS
Jaguar Honeycomb tablet (ZiiLabs ZMS-20/40, old 3Dlabs crew) = 26-52 GFLOPS

*I haz pocket console! ...almost!*
Mali T604 = 50+ GFLOPS (5 times faster than Mali 400 architecture + faster clocks due to 28nm?)
nVidia GeForce 8600 GT = 115 GFLOPS
Adreno 300 = 10-150 GFLOPS (Many 28nm SoC configs and total guesstimate!)

*Now we're talking*
ATI Radeon HD 6450 = 200 GFLOPS
Xbox 360/PS3 = 200-250 GFLOPS
ST-Ericsson Nova A9600 = 210 GFLOPS (28nm A15 SoC slated for mid/late 2012, powerVR series 6)

*lol, look at your pathetic consoles, I haz true HD*
nVidia 8800 GTX = 350 GFLOPS
nVidia GTX 280 = 1 TFLOP
Latest top end = Lots of TFLOPS! (pointless for gamers under a gazzillion res? :p)

Note:
Doesn't include CPU performance, single compute only. Also don't forget low power devices have huge power/heat constraints (tablet/phone performance could separate over the next year or two, 100-200 GFLOP phones might not be viable for another year or two)

Resolution plays a massive part too!!!!!

Owenb said “Wrong. The Ipad2 has two SGX 543 cores. The GPU is called the 543MP2 as it has 2 cores and the NGP has 4 and that chip is called the 543MP4.”
What do you mean wrong? That’s precisely what I just said. Mp2 is two cores your post before you said it was x2 GPU’s which is different.

Owenb said “You really need to stop believing every press release. The 20 increase is probably over old chips from 3-4 years ago which weren't very aggressive GPU's.”
It’s not just the press realise a number of different companies have all said the same thing. The press realise’s has been proven true year in year out and they said 100x increase over the chips from 4+ years ago and 20times increase todays chips so no its not a 20 increase over old chips. There is a reason pretty much all the major companys shown the chips have droped Nvidia and ARM and taken up PowerVR for next gen. Thats because the speed is true.

Why shouldn’t I believe them with a 10+ year proven track record of hitting the target they say they will hit? The company’s all said 20 times faster than series 5 and 100times faster than series 4.

The same argument happen with the 543 and loads of people said that will never happen and look it was precisely what the press said.

Owenb said “There is no silver bullet- one can't make a GPU that uses ~2 watts to be as fast as a GPU that uses 50 watts within a couple of years- it just not possible.”
Yet we have that today, so much for not being possible.

It is possible with massively different architectures. This is over simplified but the mobile GPU only renders what you see, the desktop 50+watt GPU renders everything include all the stuff you cannot see. So the mobile chip can outperform the 50watt desktop chip in complicated screens. Plus you have the stuff like hardware ray tracing arriving in mobile chips which will allow mobile chips to do graphics desktop chips cannot currently dream off. The 543mp4 already beats today’s 50 watts desktop chips.

Another thing you seemed to have missed is the jump between PowerVR generations is massive. The past few years have just been refreshes in the same generation. Next year is the first true new generations in years. It’s going to be an exciting time in the mobile space with 6th generation’s graphics. We have been on 5th generation’s graphics for a few years now which a lot of people don’t seem to realise. Next year will be like the jump from MX to SGX.

2.7 TFLOPs Single Precision compute power with my GPU... and I have 2 :D

Guess I'll be waiting quite a WHILE before any phone catches up to that! lol

Pottsey:

A quick google shows that you have been fighting the PowerVR is greater than all debate for years. They design great stuff but if it's possible to do X on a mobile it's going to be possible to do X*100 on a desktop due heat/battery life.

...and that's only using ~30/40% of Mali 400's potential with no optimisation.

Lot's of decent games, like shadowgun, coming over the next 6 months + iOS games (where's all the stuff like Deadspace, Infinity Blade etc? They were ported to Android last year lol)

Wow..

For Chainfire 3D, I think you only need root (unless it says otherwise in the XDA thread), you should just be able to install it from the market.

Chainfire 3D thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1087427

I like the idea of this, how necessary is it? What I mean by that is it seems the SGS2 is quite popular, surely future games will be compatible?

I hear that a lot but it is very unlikely to happen. It's not that simple due to patents and licence's. Can you name one person that would licence and use the architecture on the PC? I do agree if the architecture was moved to the desktop it would beat the same architecture in the mobile space. The big problem is there is no one that can put the same architecture in the desktop space. Both AMD and Nvidia don't have the patents or licence. Both don't want to licence off PowerVR and no one left is interested in entering the desktop market as it's so small.

Intel have been using PowerVR IP for years- with fairly terrible results. Some of their Atom chips, and infamous IGP did the same. It has been rumoured that their next Atom will use the SGX543 core.

Has anyone managed to get dungeon defenders to work at all? it loads up fine but then when it comes to actually playing the game it just crashes heh.

Maybe people will take you more seriously when you learn how to use the ******* quote function. I mean seriously... how hard is it?

says more about other people than it does him if a box is needed around a piece of text in order for people to listen to him.

Pottsey never has used the quote button and he never will. its about time people got over that and got on with it.

Where do you guys download the tegra games legally? i have a SGS 2 and the usual places won't let me download for obvious reasons.

Read through this thread and you will understand.

There is nothing illegal about this at all, unless distributing a driver for use on the wrong chipset is illegal, which I doubt.

You need the market fix to see the Tegra games which is available in the pro version of Chainfire3D.

Hold up ... I'm away from the forums for a week or so and something like this comes along? Have just skim-read the thread ... are you really saying that by installing a driver I'll be able to play the likes of Galaxy on Fire 2 on my SGS1? My bro's been playing that on his iPhone for months and I've been green with envy ...
