Format as in file format?

You should just be able to right click the drive in my computer and read either NTFS or FAT32 next to the File System: bit.
 
Take a look at the drive. It should say on it.

If you're not going to open up your PC for whatever reason (I don't know what sort of warranty you have or anything) then someone else can probably advise some sort of software to find this out for you.
 
Everest Home Edition will probably be able to tell you. Or you can just Google the name of the drive (as shown in the device manager in Windows itself).
