What game really had an impression on you?

I played Bioshock Infinite today after all this time, as before I couldn't play it, and it wasn't until the paris scene it really touched a nerve. A feeling of complete bliss, a wishful dream and the belief that everything is ok and the world is happy

Such brilliant writing and game design.


So what games really touched a nerve with you? If any

Witcher 3.

Two scenes in particular.

Early in the game when you're still in Velen, I stumbled upon a little hut in the forest. Inside was corpses of a mother and her child with flies buzzing around them. Murdered and been dead for a while. The father swinging from a tree outside. Maybe I was in a particular mood that day but the entire scene enraged me so much that I rode around the entire forest area and butchered any and all bandit scum I could find. Must've covered every square meter of the entire area to ensure they're all dead.

Second scene. And this is nothing special in particular. During H.O.S , the morning after the wedding. Woke up next to this lake area. Beautiful gorgeous day. The entire scene was so perfect. This quaint eastern European 12th century village, surrounded by this lake with two islands in the middle. As you wander around the village, people are still cleaning up from the night before, the village hall still had tables loaded with drink and half eaten plates of food. I think I spent about an hour (in real time) just wandering around the entire area taking in the view. The graphics, the music, settings, everything was just perfect.

CD Project Red really took the adventure RPG type game to new levels for me.
 
Witcher 3, in particular blood and wine, what an amazing sendoff. Red Dead Redemption was very memorable. Mass Effect series as a whole, although number three's initial ending was a letdown as a whole series was a great ride all the way through.
 
Might as well answer here too as they are PC games :p

Deus Ex. Hadn't played anything like it before, not really played anything like it since. While I enjoy the modern Deus Ex games too they're just not quite the same.

As for more modern games probably Life Is Strange, been a long time since I've got so into a game, the characters, the story. It was just fantastic.
 
Not a PC game, but Zelda 64 is the game that will always stand out for me, a couple of scenes in particular, riding Epona for the first time in the ranch as adult Link, and entering the Hyrule fields for the first time after beating the Deku Tree dungeon

Ooh I can still here the music in my head as write this!!

Another truly wonderful game, again not a PC game, Red Dead Redemption, that is also a masterpiece and will live long in my memory. I don't play many single player games now I'm older now and have family and work commitments so I can't sink hours at a time in on something like Witcher3 sadly, I stick 5-6 hour campaigns and multiplayer shooters now
 
Another one. World of Warcraft

For all its faults these days, back during Vanilla and TBC it really was something.

The first time clearing Karazhan, tanking waves in Hyjal Summit, making our way through the Black Temple, wiping for 5 hours straight of Lady Vashj, only to kill her on the last pull of the night with only a mage and one healer (barely) alive. The pure joy on Vent was something to behold. Doing our Amani War Bear mount run in Zul'Aman twice a week.

Our guild done this great thing where we have weekly competitions to see who could clear the Hellfire Peninsula Heroics the fastest. Shattered Halls, Hellfire Ramparts and Blood Furnace. Winning team gets free summons for a week or something silly. The idea behind it was to farm for enchanting items so the guild bank could offer free enchants. The next week we'd move on to Slave Pens, Steamvault and Underbog competitions. The ideas were silly but fun and the community just awesome. We all looked forward logging in.

Community started dying off halfway through LK and that was the end of it for me.
 
Mafia 1, amazingly immersive for its time and really hooked me into caring about the characters. Then to a lesser extent Mafia 2 but nearly cried at the crossover point between the first and second!!

EVE online because it was the first MMO I played that I actually cared about who I was playing with, I genuinely liked the guys I was playing with. Was sad to leave it but it was too much of a grind and the guys i was playing with fell out of love with it too.

Skyrim on release was great too, locked myself in my room drinking mead for a week playing it, loved every second of it.

And on the negative side No Mans Sky left an impression on me. An impression on what could have been, an impression of not meeting your goals, and an impression of what I want from a developer!
 
Oh yes EVE. :D

Lonely mining in some desolate belt, getting ambushed by a few ships, and DESTROYING THEM. :p

I never really did much else though... Mining and hoarding and chatting...
 
I think the first game that really, properly blew me away was Morrowind. The soundtrack is amazing and perhaps the best of all time, the story lines are gripping, the lore is incredibly well written, detailed and interesting, the environment seemed out of this world, great characters, everything. Then there's the level of detail with all the spells and enchanting, nothing like what we have today with the dumbed down Skyrim. It is a masterpiece.

Even with all the latest graphics Mankind Divided fails to be anywhere near as good as the original. Wish they spent resources to make a better story for that game instead of that silly breach mode :(
 
Emerging from the Vault in Fallout 3 and taking in the sights (as brown and grey as they were) was the first time I had ever really thought about how open a game could be.
As much as I enjoyed Morrowind (my first RPG), Fallout 3 is the one that hooked me. Oblivion did the same thing.

Witcher 3 really shows how good a story can be as mentioned. So many scenes were well written that its hard to nail down the best ones.
 
The Witcher 3. In particular, the scene you are met with if you choose to play as a philandering d-bag. Never have I felt so very alone. If only I'd resisted temptation.
 
a few moments spring to mind.

Discovering Erena's Peace on Quest for Glory 1 (Amiga).
The huddle of people and excitement around getting the first Street Fighter 2 machine at the arcade (Arcade).
The airport terrorist scene on CoD MW - no idea which one, probably 2 or 3 (PC).
The end of the original Halo when driving to escape (PC).
And the bit at the start of Dishonored when that chick got murdered, that was pretty strong! (PC).

Great idea for a thread!

I'd say there's two significant games in my life that really went so far as to actually provoke a change of opinion on the industry, even my actual day to day life in terms outlook.

Bioshock was the first. Didn't realise games could tell such a rich and impressionable story in ways film could never do.

Second is definitely Journey. Still THE MOST important piece of artistic material I've ever invested in. Changed my perspective on life and death.
