What game really had an impression on you?

Fantastic thread.. So many memories jump out:
- Playing "The Dig" on CD-ROM was my first experience with "multimedia". Where a game could have voice acting, detailed videos and a fairly cool sci-fi plot. Completely changed my view of the medium.
- "Total Annihilation" re-defined what a strategy game could be and introduced me to world of modding.
- "Ultima Online" - seeing dozens of people getting on with their lives in a virtual setting.. mind blowing at the time!
- Call of Duty 2, specifically storming the beach at Point Du Hoc and hearing Ronald Reagan's speech in the background as you climb. Stirring stuff.

Honestly i could go on and on.

Witcher 3.

Two scenes in particular.

Early in the game when you're still in Velen, I stumbled upon a little hut in the forest. Inside was corpses of a mother and her child with flies buzzing around them. Murdered and been dead for a while. The father swinging from a tree outside. Maybe I was in a particular mood that day but the entire scene enraged me so much that I rode around the entire forest area and butchered any and all bandit scum I could find. Must've covered every square meter of the entire area to ensure they're all dead.

Second scene. And this is nothing special in particular. During H.O.S , the morning after the wedding. Woke up next to this lake area. Beautiful gorgeous day. The entire scene was so perfect. This quaint eastern European 12th century village, surrounded by this lake with two islands in the middle. As you wander around the village, people are still cleaning up from the night before, the village hall still had tables loaded with drink and half eaten plates of food. I think I spent about an hour (in real time) just wandering around the entire area taking in the view. The graphics, the music, settings, everything was just perfect.

CD Project Red really took the adventure RPG type game to new levels for me.

Good post ^

Witcher 3, in particular blood and wine, what an amazing sendoff. Red Dead Redemption was very memorable. Mass Effect series as a whole, although number three's initial ending was a letdown as a whole series was a great ride all the way through.

The Witcher 3. In particular, the scene you are met with if you choose to play as a philandering d-bag. Never have I felt so very alone. If only I'd resisted temptation.

Agree with all, Witcher 3 for me. As I've mentioned multiple times, on this forum, I've still not completed it and I am taking my sweet time on it. I play it like a TV series. Only for a few hours at a time, doing a quest or 2 but as they are all so damn well written they are like mini stories.

For example, the Witcher who slaughters an entire village because they tried to kill him... Just an epicly written mini quest.

Not pc but the last of us both for its opening and ending, tbh the whole journey was amazing

Dark souls 1 just for how it got its claws in me, mainly in its world design

Oh crap! Dark Souls 1!!!

Nothing has quite had me hooked and speechless after unlocking shortcuts and realising it's all connected!

Agree Bioshock Infinite wiped me out at the end.

Unravel is a really touching game. When you consider that 90% of the games I (we) all play are about death and destruction, this game is so charming and makes you feel 'all warm inside' playing it, especially if you have kids to relate to it.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West also has some touching moments and is a heart felt story.

Exactly that! The lift back to firelink from the church, the whole dark root area, the tower with havel in it!

Lol, Havel... The first time I met him, "huh, are you an NPC?", *slowly walks up*... "NOPE, NOPE, NOPE!", *roll... splat*... "YOU DIED".

Neocron, nailed the perfect cyberpunk mmo, for me.

Absolutely this! Shame it was developed/published by such relatively unknown companies that it never really became big, IMO it was years ahead of its time in terms of gameplay mechanics, but the community was never really that big... I lost so many nights due to OP wars and farming Warbots outside MB!

Crossing my fingers, toes and everything else that Cyberpunk 2077 can recreate some of that magic... If anyone can do it it's CDPR!

I guess these won't really be surprising but:

Quake 2 - as awesome as the first game was it was Q2 which really pulled me in to this day there is something about that game that really resonates with me.

Deus Ex 1 and the original Half-Life really pulled me in as well - nothing else really did it after that until Dishonoured.

For movie-like story telling - The last of us.
For pant wetting horror - Alien Isolation.
For music that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up - Halo 1 theme.
For nostalgic memories - Day one release play throughs of Doom 2 and Half Life 1 + 2.

The Bloody Baron quest in W3 leaves its mark, as do lots of other parts of the game. Slowly wandering in Skyrim with that amazing soundtrack playing, not to mention meeting your first dragon.... and the opening half hour or so of HL2 had a real impact.

life is strange; that game sucked me in hard.

That's the only really modern game which has affected me, before that there was FF VII,

I would say Ultima Online back in 1998-2001 for me.
This was my first MMO and I joined due to all my gaming mates being on it already. On my first day I spawned in some random town (Skara Brae), decided to test 'war mode' on a cat. I died. Got resurrected, only to find the same cat nearby who (was still out for fresh blood) who chased me around town until a friend (OCUK's Halfmad) came to save me and gate me to the city of Vesper, which became my home town.

Everyone's first MMO experience is something they'll never forget - good or bad. I recall mining a few days later in Minoc by the mountain side. I had ventured slightly out of the towns 'safe zone' and a stranger ran past asking for directions, which I naturally gave. A few moments later I reached into my backpack for some tools - only to realise he had robbed me of mining picks and food! I rapidly realised that a stranger in this game is rarely friendly...

I have two:

The walking dead season one. I've never felt so emotionally attached to game characters before.

Brothers : a tale of two sons : for a game with no dialogue it has an incredibly touching story as well as a beautiful world to play in.

How could I forget this, especially the "battlefield" area... Don't want to say any more than that to spoil it for anyone who's not played it (what's wrong with you people?! :p)

Quake 1 - the game that really got me into pc gaming and first person shooters.
Half-Life 1 - the perfect action fps - was a huge leap over other fps games in story and action at the time.
Deus Ex 1 - best use of fps and rpg elements I had ever seen. Excellent story and world that sucked me right in.

Then for mp it was:

Unreal Tournament 99 - my first mp game that I got hooked with - I never could quite get into Quake mp.

Counter-Strike Beta 5.2 - Version 1.5 - best mp experience I had growing up - played 1.6 for a few years but never felt as enjoyable as the previous versions. I think I stopped playing it competitively in 2005.

Honourable mentions:

Thief 1 & 2 - excellent games that for me started the stealth genre of fps games to come.
System Shock 2 - excellent scifi/rpg with stealth elements.
Hidden & Dangerous - best ww2 squad based game at the time.
Medal of Honour Allied Assault - most realistic ww2 fps in its day.
Soldier of Fortune 1&2 - most realistic gore I had ever seen in a fps.

My first exposure to pc gaming was from Wolfenstein and the Doom games along with mdk -which I used to watch my dad play when he got home from work.
