What game wowed you the most when you first played it?

There have been so many over the years but the one that sticks out for me on the PC is Ahserons Call (I've said this in my posts over the years).

You have to remember, at that time, this was one of the first MMO's - there was Everquest and UO around that time but this was the first where you had proper stats (you upped your run and you ran faster, etc.).

I remember wandering up town and the people running around were actual people! It sounds stupid now but this was years before WoW / etc. There were people talking, interacting with each other, learning new spells together and generally just having fun. It was a time when we ran around the world map just to see what was there.

I had great times on that game. Far to many to list here.

Some wow me for totally different reasons, for example recently, Crysis for graphics, TF2 for multi, Mass effect for story/setting, Slaker for lighting, Portal for originality and that's just in the last 12 months.

point is way too many over the years to even begin to answer that question. :)

Half-Life 2. The physics were and still are incredible. Never even thought about physics in games before i played it.

Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition - I just about wee'd my pants when i got this for Christmas!

Toejam & Earl - A graphically simplistic game, but the gameplay is so much fun

Gynoug - Amazing gameplay VERY addictive

Goldeneye 64 - I don't think any game has had the wow factor like this one when i first played it. Was a fan of Perfect Dark too.

Turok 2 - I couldn't believe how much fun the Cerebral Bore was, graphically awesome too.

Resident Evil 2 - The gameplay and visuals blew me away

Gran Turismo 2 - See above

Medal of Honour Allied Assault - See above above

Soldier of Fortune 2 - The mindless brutallity!

Monkey Island 2 :)

I remember seeing the big box version in a super-market when I was around 8, I never read/herd anything about it but liked the box cover and rear screen shots so bought it with my x-mas money I had from the week earlier (game was around £16.99). I remember getting it home and asking my dad to install it on our Tiny (that was the make) PC we had for x-mas. He never has a clue and gave up. Took me about a week to find out we were typing 'a; install' rather then 'a: install'. I remember it going to the install screen and going nuts. The gameplay was incredible and kept me entertained for months.

Edit: looking at the other suggestions in this post i'd say a good 80% of choices are not recently made. I'm tempted to say perhaps its nostalgia making them seem so good? But then again, i'd happily boot up and play any 'classic' now.

Wing Commander III. In game FMV was a first along with multiple branching storyline oh and it had Ginger Lynn-Allen in the cast too. :D

After that the next one was probably Longbow 2, the scenery and missile effects particularly at dusk and dawn were awesome, probably the peak of what was possible on the 3Dfx Voodoo 2 graphics card.

Its always the graphics that get a wow from me and simply nothing can come close to when I bought the very first geforce card a 256 back in 1999.

This was the first thing with hardware t&l and I remember like a day later the quakeIII demo was out, when I first saw these 2 things combined it was something else. I don't think there has ever been such a jump graphics tbh, I remember getting my m8's round and them just sitting there with their mouths wide open in total disbelief. Of course their matroxs and voodoo cards soon got binned.

Baldur's Gate 1. It came free with the first PC my family bought, before I started buying my own PCs. That style of RPG is still my favourite genre of game now after what must be about 10 years :)

max payne.

i remember when someone brought it at school. Had the whole boarding house leaning over the monitor to get a glimpse of bullet time.

also medieval total war, when i realised that it was much much more than just moving pawns on a map. lol.

oh, and HL2 for the physics engine.

Quake 2 - the first time I fired it up after installing my new Voodoo2 and getting proper 3D graphics. In 800 x 600 res too...
