What gin for gin & tonic? (gift question)

Grab Tanqueray

I like Bombay Sapphire but those that don't like it tend to really dislike it.

Tanqueray for a gift IMO - a really nice gin without anything that is too risky either way. Tanqueray 10 is markedly different because it is made differently and as such isn't really "safe", although it is nice I'd personally prefer a normal Tanqueray to a 10. Plymouth is a really nice gin, very underrated.

I personally really like Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray, Plymouth and maybe a couple of others. I'd avoid Gordon's like the plague, same with beefeater or any of that "class" of gin.

I'm not a big gin drinker but, on the odd occasion I do drink it, I like Bombay Sapphire. I have a bottle of Hendricks in the house which I quite like as well (it's great as a substitute for vodka in a Bloody Mary).

I've noted down some of the suggestions from the gin drinkers and will give some of them a try :)

Wow, lots of Gin drinkers in here it seems.

Was just going to come on here and ask about Gin. I'm no expert, and I don't drink many spirits (I'm a cider drinker by trade :)) but I am partial to a G&T.

I've never liked Gordon's and Sapphire has never really grabbed me. I have a bias opinion towards Plymouth Gin having spent 4 years living there. If anyone is down that way the distillery tour is great. It gives you a great insight into how Gin is made, and is also amazing that all the worlds Plymouth Gin comes from that one small building.

However, I have just discovered Hendrick's at the work Christmas party and its great. Had it served as suggested with cucumber and it seemed 'smoother' than Plymouth if that makes sense?

I haven't had Tanqueray though, so will have to try that one as its getting a lot of love in here.

But... that's only half the story. What Tonic's do people recommend? In a pub your limited to what they have which is usually Schweppes. Are there any other good Tonics out there? And any specific combinations of Gin/Tonic that people go for?

Agreed with Fever Tree, thats generally my wifes (sounds weird, only got married on Thursday!) favourite.

I also bought her a bottle of Bloom gin which she is really enjoying at the moment, was about £23 from Booths.

Bought her one of these a while back to called G'Vine which she said was really nice

I like a Gibson.

I make mine very dry. I just hold up the bottle of vermouth and let the rays of the sun pass through and into the shaker. That is QUITE enough vermouth in my GIN thankyouverymuch.

In order of preference:
Chase, Sipsmiths, Hendricks, Tanquery, Saphire.

Hendricks, Fever Tree tonic water, slice of cucumber and ice in a snIfter is perfection. As my housemate would say, anything less is peasantry!

Where can I pick up these fancy gins? I've only seen Tanquery and Hendricks in supermarkets.
Also, tonic water. I'm sure I've never ever seen any other tonic water apart from own brand and Schweppes.

As one that's a bit more unusual I quite liked Blackwood's gin when I've had it, produced in limited quantities from ingredients on Shetland it was rather good - however as it is made in fairly small batches that may vary somewhat.

I tend to find places like the Whisky Exchange do a good selection. Otherwise you're limited to places like Selfridges which come at a premium compared on online stores.

As for Tonics, we get our Fever Tree from Booths supermarket although i appreciate its not found everywhere

I've heard it works quite well. Especially with Hendricks.

The best supermarket tonic by a country mile is Waitrose's Essential. As far as I'm aware (and it's been a while since I checked) it's the only tonic water apart from Fever Tree that doesn't contain artificial sweeteners - and as such, it's delicious.

Sod paying seven times the price for Fever Tree - it's really not that good.
