What gin for gin & tonic? (gift question)

Interesting for me to read this thread back and see how my tastes have changed over a short period of time. I'm now quite sold on Fever Tree tonic (though it is still a rarity for me to buy because of the cost). Schweppes is firmly my 'standard' tonic now though, whereas it used to just be the supermarkets brand.

I still think Boe is my favourite, though Edinburgh Gin is a close second.

I dont notice enough of a difference between Schweppes and a supermarket tonic to go for one over the other, but I like my G&T in a large glass so usually go for the supermarket cans as they do the 250ml cans over the smaller Schweppes ones.

I always look at Fever Tree and decide I just can't justify its cost. I'm sure its better, but 3x better..?

I'll have a look out for Boe, but I must say I've never seen it before.

Fever Tree really is the best for G&T.

BBRs No.3 is a good favourite gin at the moment. I love that gin is so inexpensive for the good stuff.

Whats Tanqueray Ragpur like? Anything else I should try? I've got a birthday coming up and would like to drop some hints about getting some gin. So far top of the list is Hendricks, followed by Plymouth, but I'm open to suggestion :)

Don't bother with Rangpur, its awful. If you want lime use fresh, if you want a fancy flavored gin try Saffron Gin.

Yup No. 3 is great, also Sipsmith. Beefeater is my go to cheap gin.

Plymouth gin is beautiful, just ahead of Hendricks.

I'd put Hendricks way above Plymouth, but it's all a matter of personal preference.

I've recently got a bottle of The Botanist gin which is really nice, and drinks quite nicely on the rocks without any tonic.

Just trying Plymouth for the first time - very ordinary.

My preference for gins I've tasted so far:

Sipsmith > Blackwood's > Hendrick's > Bombay Sapphire > Plymouth > Gordon's

PS: Always with Fever Tree tonic - I will never buy any other tonic now. Fever Tree beats them all, hands down.

Tanqueray.
Bombay sapphires a "day to day" gin if you ask me.

Saying that I don't often drink gin with tonic, prefer extra dry martinis straight up with an olive.
If it is with tonic it's usually a dash, say 100ml of gin and 50ml of tonic.

Plymouth is only good if you get the navy strength.

I got back from Greece yesterday and had a quick look in duty free, they had a few others for great prices.....and i didn't buy any :(

Bump!

We have a whisky thread, a vodka thread, and a general drinking thread. I nominate this thread as the gin thread!

I bought this bottle yesterday. It's very interesting, thanks to the botanicals as well as the 6 months it spent in oak cognac casks. A great depth of flavour with a fabulous nose. Beautiful by itself, and probably gets better with the addition of a drop of water. Mix it with Fever Tree and it certainly makes a unique G&T, a nice one but I think it's such a good gin the tonic masks it somewhat. Keen to try it in a gimlet.

Anyone drank anything interesting recently? I've been hearing about G&Ts served with strawberry & black pepper but yet to make/try one.

The Mrs likes gin, so we started to get a few... I think so far we just have:

Bulldog (no idea, I liked the name at the airport)
Sipsmiths
Tanqueray
Tanqueray 10
Bombay Sapphire
Hendricks

Think that's it at the moment. I need a decent spirits chest!

Wasn't overly impressed by either of the Adnams but certainly the bozzier one is preferred.

My favourite is still the Botanist and as above, happy to have it tonicless. It packs so much flavour and the botanicals are so well balanced with the alcohol.

We got a bottle of Dr. J's a fair while back now as it's a very local operation. The bottle is still 2/3rds full as we really don't like it. Fortnums say the queen drinks it but to me it feels cloyey, cheap and spirity.

Aldi's own brand has won lots of awards and is better than Gordons at the more basic end of things.

haha to mention Aldi's, it's what we're getting shipped in for our wedding next month along with their pimms as we need 30L of pimms and this is half the cost of regular branded stuff. Same goes with the gin. We don't quite need 30L but 4L, saves some cash and a mate tried it to "test" it for me, and drank the whole bottle. ha
