What good strategy games are out there atm?

I bought Company of Heroes over 3 years ago and still play it maybe 4 or 5 times a week.

Steam says I've played it a total of 356 hours ...

If that's not a recomendation I dont know what is :)

Is it me or has the RTS genre been crap lately? Particularly in a more traditional sense.

For me the two best RTS hopes I had C&C4 and SupCom 2 were huge let downs.

Just hope Starcraft 2 isnt too geared towards competive multiplayer, I do like a good narrative.

You've deffinately got to try the Total War Series. Rome and Empire are the most fun and varied in my opinion - but if you want it challenging then the original, Shogun, really needs the most strategic thought on difficult settings!

Based on what you've played before, I would recommend the following:

Dawn of War 2 + Chaos Rising expansion (Made by Relic, makers of Company of Heroes)
Supreme Commander 2 (You enjoyed the first, why not continue the story?!)

I also still play the original Dawn of War, but that's a completely different gameplay style to Dawn of War 2, and much older, so it might not be your thing (DOW1 is base-building, DOW2 is more tactical, no base building except in multiplayer).

Napoleon Total War is only 3 months old, but can be had for £8 delivered at the moment. I'm quite looking forward to receiving it, as the only strategy game I've played in the past 8 years or so has been Civ 4!

Supreme Commander 2 (You enjoyed the first, why not continue the story?!)

because they raped every aspect that made sup com unique and not just a C&C reskin then decided that strategy and tactics where an unnecessary interference and removed them.

King Arthur the role playing wargame, I enjoyed the demo I'm waiting for it to go on some kind of sale, as is always the case on steam.

I really fancy some of these myself, I've not played any strategy since DoW and before that C+C red alert.

Which has the strongest single player of the lot just now? galatic civlisations?

Men of War was fun, I need to replay it, got frustrated playing it on hard it's a really difficult game. Kinda refreshing, can take direct control of any unit. It's not for the feint of heart though, you have to re-arm tanks with fuel ammo with supply trucks etc.

Wish they would make another Ground Control sequel 8(

Try Rome: Total War, pretty much said to be one of the best, if not the best in the series...

That being said, I'd throw out Homeworld 2. It's a neat little game, basically a space RTS... but, it's well worth getting in to - has a decent modding community to make the game more expansive / enjoyable. And to be brutally honest, its the only RTS I ever go back too from time to time. I just love the battles you can have in it... little fighter craft dogfighting with each other and cruisers / destroyers knocking ten bells out of each other for supreme dominance of whatever sector you're fighting in.

I've tried to play homeworld 2 after every hardware upgrade for the past 5 years, but it's just unplayable. I get *massive* framerate drops (to well below 1fps) as I spin the camera around. It's only become worse as hardware becomes more advanced.

If there is any community fix for this, I'd love to hear about it!

In light of this thread I went and got the demos for Men of War and Company of Heroes. The latter I've taken to quite well, it's very DoW, had a good tutorial, so I'm going to pick up the anthology edition if I can find it in stock at a decent price.
Men of War, no tutorial and really bad voice acting, if it gets bad enough to be "good" I've yet to see. I'll have another plug at it tonight, it does look really nice, and seems to be a bit different to anything I've played before.
