What happened to great music in games ?

There was soooo many games with great music back in the day (granted production and sound quality might not have been amazing). Anyone remember Star Fighter 3000? - I still find the game over music haunting today. (Crazy what they managed with that game when it was running on the A30xx (Acorn) with only a 12MHz CPU, 2MB RAM and 0 3D hardware acceleration).

I remember a lot of old games having some bloody billiant OSTs and there are some new ones

BF2
Skyrim
ME2 and ME3
lol even viva pinata which I played for a while.

heres a classic for you all :)

and one of my slightly more recent favourites

I personally think that they should go back to the 8 bit era music-wise and stop trying to pass games off as Hollywood blockbusters/real life simulations, being a game is nothing to be embarrassed about.

Obligatory Youtube video:

Total Annihilation music was great, I seem to recall it won some awards, perhaps because of how smart (for the time) the music was – the music changed as you built up to, participated in and recovered from battle.

Also the UT99 music captured the tone of the game perfectly

UT99 stands in there in a lit of timeless games that no one who played it back then will ever forget

The OST to Dustforce is brilliant, very chilled out even though the game is rage-inducing!
Also purchased Shovel Knight over the weekend and the music to that is gloriously retro.

Pretty hard to top this... this track stands out for me but the whole thing was good (the game was bloody under rated as well)

So apparently its made other appearances :)

But we're talking a gap of almost 2 decades here

To be fair too many good ones out there to list.. (on both PC and console)

GTA (the early 2D games) deserves a mention for innovation here as well.. I mean honestly the sound folder was bigger than the game :D I thought the London pack was brilliant as well

Amen to that... when I first heard about the reboot my only thought was "take my £30 right now" and I've not spent more than a tenner on pc games in years!
Honestly a spending spree when it comes to games is popping on the bundle sites or GOG and spending 5 quid these days, lol

The Faster than Light OST is awesome, not sure what else I've played recently that has a soundtrack that really captures my attention!

Just to add to the oldskool stuff.... It wasn't the intro music that did it for me in BF2, it was all about the loading music if you were MEC!

This thread is also missing some Hellmarch!

Doh!!

How do you embed youtube links?

Project X
Cannon Fodder

Need for speed 2 SE Romulus 3

Doom 2

Oh my god, the pit!

and of course this all time classic

I agree, good music is seriously lacking in games now a days.

I can still pick out where the Chainsaw, Imp screams, super shotgun blasts etc would be in the Doom music in my head!

Ultima Online 2 Preview ;)! I remember this being one of the videos in PC Gamer magazine, along with Max Payne !

1999 !! My first geforce card was bought just to play this game

you know brilliant opening music or just great tracks. just been discussing this with ltmatt on twitter. when you listen to older games they seemed to have such great music.is the music side neglected now ?

what are your fav music/tracks from games

ill get us started

Waaaat? Man music in games are still fantastic. Have you heard the OST for Transistor? That OST was fantastic.

it probably has got worse, so has [imo] a lot of music, just look at the charts and you'll see the problem. plus its a lot easier these days to mix a couple of tracks on your ipad, upload them and have it somehow go viral and make you famous for 5 minutes, you don't need the dedication of days gone by.

there's still some good tunes, although often its too easily lost in the background/generic and distracting. the sea shanties in ac4 were pretty funny though, and the songs in skyrim are pretty good [or at least there are some epic covers out there] and dirt 3 has the decency to put in some well themed music, and i cant hate anything with rise against in the soundtrack.
