Oh sorry there mr Moderator wannabes. :D

Self moderation shows a pretty advanced and sophisticated user base so thanks for that.

whats not sophisticated or advanced to use is the search button.

Just wondering if anyone else has has been in the same situation/felt the same...

I've been a PC gamer for a solid 6 years now,But what the hell has happened to pc games these days?

I feel that it has gone downhill bigtime,Games been released so buggy they are unplayable...and the ones that are do not live up to their hype (Dead island).

They are all getting the same,Especially FPS..I tried out the BF3 Alpha and it did not impress me at all just the same old stuff running around with a gun which..Yes i know thats what you do in a FPS but im betting give it a few months that will also be boring.

Then you got the whole DRM copy protection that just causes annoyance to the legit user most of the time,Then you got added on stuff like Windows live which limits the amount of times you can activate your own game and if you active it too many times your stuffed for online (GTA IV is a good example.)

Then on top of that...most pc games today you cannot resell because their keys get tied on services such as Steam etc....then we cant even sell our steam accounts.

I thought about packing up pc gaming,Selling my gaming system and buying a new new TV...and getting a PS3....no hastle and i can still et my gaming fix.

I know it sounds like im a moaning old git :p,But maybe we could have a debate on this issue....where will it ever end?

I'm with you dude. That's why I'm keeping my gaming laptop just for Diablo 3, and to finish off Deus Ex.

I'm going the Xbox route. inb4 flame.

for the OP

Just fill in the blanks

If you're a games developer wanting a quick and cheap development cycle with good return for you investment, which platform are you going to choose?

The PC games market is rife with piracy and different hardware combinations that must be a nightmare for developers. A single platform removes nearly all hardware and driver compatibility issues.

With that said, some games do make it to the PC games and some eare even optimised further than their console siblings. Is either one better than the other? No not really, Console offer a cheap dependable platform but don't offer the bleeding edge as that of PCs. The trade off is higher hardware costs, driver issues and even a bug here and there.

Xbox has been around too long now.. It is slowing down the PC gaming development which is why we are seeing our Graphics cards sustain their life cycle much longer.. Was the 8800gtx just a good card or was it just slowly streteched.

Imho, PC gaming is more than just about playing games, it's just as much about the hardware that makes more interesting.

and consoles are rife with piracy, dont forget to mention that too, boils my urine when people forget this. the ps3 used to be somewhat immune to this but not even that now, it isnt something that is exclusive to pc and not something that is only a minor portion of users on consoles either.

Im actually quite the opposite. I stopped PC gaming 2 years ago and have returned in the last few months as consoles just bore the crap out of me. Only thing I play on a console now is Fifa.

I am more excited by what pc games are in the pipeline now than I have ever been. Also, I find myself just looking at todays graphics and comparing them with the games I used to play when I was young (being 35 years old) and i'm blown away by the development of things, I can't wait to see where we are in 10 years from now :)
Also, I have never not installed a game because of DRM, I have plenty of Ubisoft games etc and DRM has had no negative effect on me.
In short: BRING IT ON, I LOVE IT!!

I just find games are becoming shorter and less challenging Back in the day you put the game difficulty to insane mode and it was quite literally insane now insane mode is how I start most games it's too easy!

you don't have to pay as many very expensive licences and use more tightly controlled online stores, it's much easier and companies like steam will provide you with people and tools to make your games distributable on thier store for no charge, that's why indie games are nearly all on the pc....

Also piracy is much more rife on the consoles, every major game so far as been out and downloadable on the consoles before it's even been released where as the pc version takes normally at least 1-2 days post release, and as we all know the only important piracy is zero day piracy.

Piracy arguments are completely irrelevant because it's just as "rife" on the consoles anyway. On top of that, the numbers are nearly always skewed to reflect the worst possible scenario, whereas they seemingly completely ignore console piracy.

People act like devs don't make any money because of piracy, while ignoring the fact that they make a lot of money despite it (depending on the game of course). If a developer does poorly with a game it's nearly always blamed on piracy for the PC version because they're clearly not going to publicly state that they knew their game was crap but shipped it anyway.

Piracy is just a convenient excuse some developers use to avoid the PC, piracy isn't the reason, it's more because they're lazy *cough*epic*cough*.

I am just glad I am not having to upgrade my PC every few months because of some new feature that my current hardware doesn't support :)

That's a very good point, graphics cards and Operating Systems that support DirectX 10 have been out for almost 5 years now and they are compatible with all new games out there.

Besides, a few years old hardware can still keep you going for a while if you decide not to jump on the bandwagon of the latest features.

Distribution costs aside, my point is looking from a business perspective, why would developer pay/invest in a team of programmers to put extra time to code different routines for different configurations for the PC, which is after all is much smaller and niche market place, when you could hit the larger market with "a one size fits all". Don't get me wrong, I love PC gaming and see it's benefits but in a world of making profit, I can see why developers would choose the platforms over cutting edge PC games. As i said, the evidence is in the PC hardware performance.

Have a look at :

Company of heroes
Men of war assault squad
World of tanks
Capsized
Trine
VVVVVV
Live for speed
Arma 2
Project reality
Left for dead 2
Team fortress 2 threads started by neil79, he iz the god of indie games.

There is many more, search for

Frozen synapse

It is best game this for so far and it show what a pc does best no big budget or marketing crap just addictive solid gameplay.

Ro2 looks promising too will know more later.

Why is it every time I read one of these threads it always begins with the same thing from the OP:

I'm going to sell my PC and buy a PS3/360.

Perhaps it is a big leap of logic here, but surely.....wait for it..... you could game on two platforms? I own a PC and recently got a PS3 (granted I got an exceptional deal on the console) but I still game on both systems. Seems like throwing toys out of the pram when people insist on selling off their current PC.
