What has happened to the RPG?

played spellforce its rts with rpg elements!

ffvii is good yep on a PS. Its a little linear as well but minor complaint really.

I'd love to play a party-based next-gen rpg on the ps3. I think ill have to wait for FFXIII and White Knight Story though. I think they are both jrpgs? (kinda)

There's your answer RPG's have gone pay monthly and as long as idiots " or rich people "are willing to pay to play a game that they already payed for we will see no influx of decent rpg's.

is that a bad thing though?

MMO add a new level to the game. I hardly ever play a single player. Unless it's thing like sim city or other type of non serious game.

Bandwidth and constant updates aren't cheap.

I feel your pain, OP.
The Baldur's Gate series are still one of my favourites, even if they've aged quite heavily now in the 8-10 years since they started.
Witcher is a good game though, although I've paused til Im upgrade, so I think you might enjoy it. With technology at its state, I think the potential is there in the future for some absolutely amazing rpgs mixing good story telling with great atmosphere.

MMORPGs are a completely different experience to single player RPGs, I don't think you can really compare them, and one certainly shouldn't replace the other imo.

Baldur's Gate was the highlight of RPGs and everything since has been pretty much downhill from there in terms of story line.

Pretty much all the developers seem to be doing is making it look pretty and with no care as to story line. I can't think of any game I've played recently where a plot event made me sit back and say "Oh my God" save maybe Bioshock.

However, surely with all the talent on these boards we could make our on ideal game ticking all of our boxes. I myself write a mean story.

Just an idea.

rpgs died on the pc the day NWN took Baldur's Gate and ripped it's soul out. It's not just decent rpgs, either - where's the stat fiddling, the turnbased games, the flight/space sims, the inventory heavy adventures? I miss 'pc games' in general and find it very hard to look at a high end system these days without seeing a more powerful 360 that can also browse the web.

The pc lost it's exclusives years ago.

I know what you are saying but the last bit is a little harsh. I would go insane if I was forced to only game on a console.

this game was such a let down, i played it for a while when i first got it then one day stopped playing, and i just never felt like playing it again, not one bit of me wanting to play it.

i'm downloading baldur's gate II :P it was out when i didn't have a PC, my mate had it and i played it for a bit, (while ago now) so its gonna be all new for me :)

All the best with BG2. ;) Once you finish it a few times you can join the "They don't make 'em like they used to club" :D

I may have slated Neverwinter 2, but I did play it an awful lot. The ending was very poor and it did feel like a slightly beefed up KOTOR in places, but to give the developer their dues they did stick at it and eventually turned a risible initial release in to something that was actually worth the money I'd paid.

We can only be thankful that Bioware still produce stuff like this because without 'em things would be even worse.

Cross your fingers for Dragon Age.

I've not really followed the development of Dragon Age tbh, and apart from the official forum info seems a little sketchy. But I live in hope.

I too miss the good old days of Bioware/Interplay. I still have BG 1 & 2, both Icewind Dales, Torment, both Fallouts...

How about Fallout 3?

Ive just bought the baldur gate compilation which has BG1 and BG2 plus there expansion packs for a £10. Never played them before, whats so good about them, what makes them so memorable.

Also will it work on vista, if not its only a £10 lost.
