What has Vista done for you?

It's good, but hard to recommend if you already have XP, that is to say, it offers very little extra for the price.

If your buying a new rig, and you need to get a new OS licence, it's worth a look.

The only thing stopping me from loving Vista is its refusal to work in 5.1

They changed the way sound is processed in Vista I lost 5.1 via s/p dif and AC3 with my old AC97 audio codec, the newer HD codec works very well with 5.1 and s/p dif.

I have the latest HD Audio drivers for my DS3 - speakers all work fine in testing but not for applications like Winamp and WMP11

I think all MS did was move everything around and gave it a fresh coat of paint - if you know what I mean.
That was what I thought so. Vista = Visual.

Not much apart from the enhanced GUI but not impressed at all with some settings moved around and sit in hidden/deeper menus. It was meant to be for an easy user experience but it is even more complicated than XP! Too many unnecessary pop-ups telling you what you need to do...etc.

I was working on Windows 98 yesterday, its interface and menu was much simpler and easier to use than Vista!

Do you really think that would have taken them almost 6 years to do? Oh no, there is much more going on in Vista than first meets the eye. It's the biggest change to Windows, under the hood at least, since Windows 95.

Caused me a lot of trouble in games :(

Everything else was good fun, but gaming no way!

FPS was fine. No lag nothing, games loaded fine,

Mouse drivers = CRAP! Mouse went everywhere. Really really uncontrolable. tried weeks to sort it, then just formatted the HDD, and only boot XP again. and its mint.

Unless anyone knows if Logitec have sorted the mouse drivers?

I'm tempted to reinstall Ultimate 64x again if it works. As i loved everything else about it.

After all that you did not mention what logitech mouse you have.
Both of my logitech mouse work fine under windows vista 64 with setpoint installed.

Hi

How do I tell which OS I have Running?..................just kidding ;)

I have Vista on one laptop and XP SP2 on the other, and apart from the look and everything being in a different place I reckon they're much the same, probably more behind the scenes.

I think all MS did was move everything around and gave it a fresh coat of paint - if you know what I mean.

Just my 2 pennys worth.

Rich

Actually quite a few major changes if you do some research, the way sound is handled has changed ,so no longer any more BSOD caused by soundcard drivers,Vista can restart the sound system unlike XP,memory management handling is very much improved, a lot more efficient now, security is more robust with a better firewall,I could name a few more but you get the idea.

Indeed, I think the GUI was just to show the public that something was different. You can do loads of stuff under the bonnet but most people aren't bothered and then complain that nothings changed.

Surely that's the point though? If the end result is that using the OS isn't much different to XP, then why should anyone care that there's changes that they just can't see? I'm going to reserve judgement on Vista until I've used it for a while (I switched to Macs over a year ago) but nobody I know has upgraded to it yet, and these are the same people who ran XP from the week it was released. The whole buzz (or lack of) surrounding Vista seems very underwhelming to say the least.

TBH Vista doesnt do anything for me which XP couldnt do, I could perfectly be happy running XP but considering I've got Vista i thought I might aswell have it installed and well it just looks nice and cleaner to me.

Quoted for truth. It doesn't do much more for me as I don't use Vista's inbuilt features, I use 3rd party stuff. But for my friends and family I think it would be a wonderful O/S.

I much prefer Vista, little details make everything so much nicer (and I say this having done an XP install last week which made me realise how much more I preferred Vista after about 6 months of using it). While it's true that Vista appears to do things that you can do fine on XP, the new graphics engine, memory management and improved stability are definite bonuses.

I've had no real issues running games in Vista, which is a definite good thing.

Because of the need for progress in life does not require progress to be obvious.
So much in life is taken for granted that if we only did what people would notice we would hardly move forwards at all.

I have open some old stuff up to see what's inside & see today's equivalent & is shocked how little is needed inside to do the same as the old & how efficiently it does it now.
But from the outside it hardly looks or functions any differently to the old, does that mean that the the new efficient way should not of been bothered with because you would not know any better unless you looked under the hood & it functions are near identical.

Also you are looking form a user aspect & not a developer view where change are much more noticeable & may offer a more efficient bring the SW we want.

It not about what what i can do if enough time & effort is put in, but what it offers out of the box.
I do use vista`s inbuilt features for the most part.
Everything i do with vista can be done with xp with allot of 3rd part SW & hacks & patches & time & effort to set it all up & hope that there is no conflicts...no thanks.

I think all the Vista hate is just because people get in their comfort zone with XP and when things run a little different they freak out.

Human nature.

The same happened with Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 95, lots of people making a lot of fuss and noise, claiming the previous generation was better etc etc. Normally settles down within a year or two.

I love it, install was a breeze vista installed all my drivers except for 1. My netgear wireless pci card which wont work. I have onboard wireless so that was not much of a problem. Finding it good to use although I do not like the explorer has changed and i h8 the interface for searching files but other than that I'm happy with it.
