ok, a mate of mine went gliding a couple of weeks ago. i got an email of said mate today, asking if i wanted to go on the 31st ( £40 for an evening "glide" )

i am scared of heights, and have never been in a plane.

so whats it like?

here

Awesome. You have let yourself in for a VERY enjoyable experience. Evening glides, can't be beaten. Hopefully the weather will hold up :D

i was thinking of gliding with some buddies down south that week but the met-office has a warning for very high wind speeds in the Basingstoke, Winchester area. They will still let you go just means its a lot more dangerous!

:p

EDIT: DOH! i wasnt even the first one to be evil!!

Couldn't resist. Sorry :p

I wouldn't mind doing it at all.

both of you. just stop it. evil ********.

Why not casually ask your mate what its like, say your just wondering (not that your crapping yourself) and see what he says about how he found it.

have done this. and didnt need to be casual about it ;)

he said it was stunning, but then he isnt scared of heights, and fly's in planes quite a lot ( long haul to hong kong at least once a year )

I am going gliding in a few weeks time, we tried a long time ago when someone who owns the local club said me and my brother could have a glide for free, we didnt think the offer would still be open to us but it turns out its still very much avaliable :D Fingers crossed in a couple of weeks I will be going up, having a little fly myself as well :)

Unlike you, I cant wait to get up there, being able to fly around but not have any noise at all will be quite a surreal experience :) let us know how you get on

oh dont get me wrong. i love the idea of going up, but to say i am brinking it is an understatement.

but someone from work said if you can manage rollercoasters etc, that i'll be fine.

I've been before but I'm in no hurry to go again, thought it was quite dull. Take off is good, landing is good but once you're up there you can be up there for hours (depending on the weather) just circling around seeing the same things over and over.

Glad I did it just to see what it was like but meh.... I want to fly in a F14 Tomcat or something:(

You'll be fine - you get a parachute, what more do you need?;)

Oh and rollercoasters are a lot more fun.

i've been gliding several times (13 flights to be exact) and its an amazing experience, we used a winch launch every time, the acceleration takes your breath away, one second your slowly rolling along the grass, next second your flying at a 50 degree angle towards the sky. then once the winch has released its so peaceful and smooth.

one thing that scared me about gliding was when i had a cable break. we were at about 500 ft still climbing at about a 50 degree angle when there was a large thud, cable snapped, we were too low down to safely fly about (need to be about 1000 ft up) so the pilot had to dive straight down (as there wasnt much runway left for us to use) there was a firing range at the end of the field we were using, and between us and the firing range was a young persons football match, needless to say its an interesting experiance watching all the parents and little dots of 2 different colours running in opposit directions. we landed and came to a stop right in the middle of the football field. me and the pilot just unhooked our harnesses, and out parachutes, got out lifted up the wing and just started pushing the glider back to the other end of the field. the kids/referee/parents didnt look amused, but who were they to argue with an RAF officer :D they shouldn't have been playing football in the path of our takeoff/landing strip!

I've got about 60hrs in gliders, and its an awesome experience! marcus said everything above really, just sit back and enjoy the ride!
