What have you done to your car today?

So had a little bit of an event today.

Drove out of my road and the next thing I hear is a loud pop and a sound of what seemed to be metallic come from the engine followed by a lot of white smoke and the car juddering when pressing the gas.

Pulled over straight away and just momentarly revd the car and could hear a disgusting noise from the turbo. It was very drony and loud. Thinking the turbos blown I disconnected the n75 valve and went on my way.

The engine was in limp mode but I was only going up the road.

Turns out boost hose came right off the intercooler. I don't understand how as the connectors are new and were tight. I've now wrapped the culprit in insulation tape so it's very tight and snug.

Reconnected the n75 connector and all is well.

Really crapped myself because of the noise. Well, could have been a great excuse for a hybrid turbo.

Amazing job on the MX5 so far. I once painted a Harley with my old man, one of the most satisfying processes ever. I'd love to have a bit more space to do this kind of thing, great idea with the car port.

Went to change the oil and filter on the MX5.

Tried to take the oil filter off from above with both hands
From below with both hands
Removed the intake manifold brace and tried above and below with both hands
Tried an oil filter removal rool
Tried a strap wrench
Tried a chain wrench which crushed the filter and bent the wrench
Tried hammering an old chisel through it and turning it, the chisel snapped
Tried doing the same with an old screwdriver but there wasn't enough room to move the handle.
Tried hammering it round with a metal bar and a mallet, it didn't move.
Started to remove the alternator so I can get more leverage on it...
Decided I was too ****ed off to continue so gave up and came inside... Will continue on Saturday!

Its always the jobs which are meant to be easy... Wish I'd given up when the strap wrench didn't work and just done the oil without doing the filter!

I found from the top easiest. I used a screwdriver tapped through it as close to the engine as possible the first time as that was royally stuck.

Ended up doing 4 actually :p

Now to let it sit till tomorrow afternoon then build it back up

Brilliant!

This afternoon i changed the oil and flitters in my wife focus. Then i went to pick up the parts for my car, brake disc’s and pads ready for me to do next weekend.

Got the oil filter off, put in some 10W40 and some Wynns stop smoke, with a new filter etc.

Still smells oily and blue-ish smoke... :p

Will run it for a few days and see if the additive does anything after being in there for a while. I doubt it. New engine still on standby. :o

One of the admins of the E46 M3 FB group liked a photo of mine, so they sent their full group logo to use as the homescreen wallpaper. Seems alright

Put the summer wheeled on the car last night. Almost killed me, I was knackered by the end of it!

I think I need to get a proper pump jack to start with. The spare tyre jacks are all very well on a small VW with small wheels but not a 2 1/2 ton pickup, especially when you have to practically lie under it to jack it up.:/ The wheels are stupid heavy as well. :D

Starter motor on the MXEunos decided it didn't want to engage, so had to bump it to drive home. Can hear it spin, but no attempt to engage the flywheel... Knocked something when doing the oil filter and fiddling around in that area?

It started several times after I did the work though. Possibly loosened something by accident and it was knocked out of kilter by a bump in the road?

@MrKnifey @Frozennova

It's more likely just out of useful life, but get at it and give it a couple of smacks to see if it will engage.

That's assuming it's got plenty of power and spinning quickly

If the car bump starts it mostly rules out more serious issues
