what headphones do you own thread - i own dt150's :)

The title is funny because the OP mentioned the DT150. all my years in headphones and I never heard them until yesterday when I decided to order them. I remember speaking to Tyll many years ago about the state of closed headphones and he bought them up but I always thought they'd be just another typical closed phone like the M50X or something along those lines. These sound absolutely stunning why is it so hard to get a nice tone like these without a messed up timbre. They have a nice, warm, easy going sound, so smooth, sound doesn't feel compressed into a small area, they breath a tad. The treble is gentle, just effortless extends then tilts a bit dark. The mids are lovely, they remind me of the HD650s mids a little without the 5k shout. They lose composure at really high volumes but this is typical of those older dynamic drivers. The resolution isn't on par with something like the Atticus, Fostex varients but it's just a nice easy listen.

People need to buy this phone at this price.

Would you say these are engaging and enjoyable to listen to music?

I listen to lots of different styles, electronic (Jarre, Vangelis etc) Metal, Rock etc...

I need closed backed and these seem to keep appearing on my radar, also the DT770's but when I last demoed them a few years back they seemed too bright? Can this be sorted?

They probably lack a bit of excitement compared to a 770 but it depends what you class as excitement. The 770 have more leading edge, more snap where as the DT150 are a bit more mellow in comparison, a bit smoothed over. The peaks are much smaller than the 770 so they're definitely better for more music. I do prefer the 150 so think they're worth a look. The 770 are not really fixable because even if you put tissue in the peaks are still significant enough to cause issues. If you game as well you might find the 150 a bit congested as there's a lot of internal cub reverb.

The timbre on the 150 is fantastic, I tend to find Beyers to have this metallic timbre but on the 150 they sound more, normal. You might like the AKG K371 if you want something a little less warm that focuses more on sub bass and has a rather even mid bass to mid transition and it's probably a bit more resolving than the 150 but there's something enjoyable about the DT150 that makes me go to it other other closed backs.

It’s games like Death Stranding and Metro where the DT990s come into their own. You could well be in the game. Actually, the positional audio was so good in metro it almost made the game too easy, you could almost close your eyes and just listen.

Just pulled the trigger on the DT770s 80ohm. This my first pair of ‘proper’ headphones so rather excited to see the difference. My current headset is a Creative Fatality that I bought 11 years ago!

Please let us have your feedback as I'm torn between these and the DT150s, I'm leaning towards the DT150s at the moment but still open to choice :)

Prepare to be blown away.
I haven't got an amp, will plug them into my mobo for now, but I imagine they should outperform my current headset! :p

Will do. Arriving tonight apparently, so will get a few rounds of music tonight and let you know.

.

I would definitely get an amp...If you get low output don’t blame the phones....

Amazes me that people are buying decent headphones and running them from crappy sources expecting the second coming... :p

Do you think a motherboard would have issues running them?

What would you class as a crappy source?

Genuinely asking. Never had a pair of good headphones; but from my limited understanding the higher the omhs, the more power you need to run them, hence the need for amps. If I am happy with the output volume, then surely that means I'm fine?

It’s the quality of the DAC also, not just the output volume...

Sound quality is only as good as the weakest part in the signal Chain.

I understand that. Well, I've improved on that front with my new system I can tell the difference in quality even with my crappy headset. I'm not discounting using an amp. For the time being I'll use my onboard soundcard (and phone when I'm out and about) and will have to go sample some external amp/dacs in future to see if I perceive a difference in quality.
