what headphones do you own thread - i own dt150's :)

Latest headphone purchase was a Denon AH-D600

It's an interesting headphone. Certainly quite different from their old Dx000 range. Bass surprisingly isn't overwhelming (I was expecting D5000 levels of loose flabby bass) which is nice. Treble is a bit meh, seems to be rather prone to sibilance which is unfortunate.

Comfort is a mixed bag, ear pads are nice and plush, clamp is reasonable, but the headband is just too narrow and does a pretty poor job of distributing the weight over my noggin.

I was kind of hoping the D600 would be a reasonably low cost alternative to the HP50 (which look ridiculous when worn and the headband comfort is even worse...) but it doesn't seem like these are quite up to par.

I liked these but felt the same way you did. My biggest issue though was their weird imaging and soundstage presentation. They had a huge hole in the centre and had a really long tunnel effect left to right.

I also had the bigger brother the D7100, I prefer it's sound slightly as it was less dry in they treble.

Not going to post my headset list, but just the two "proper" headphones I have.

Philips X1 and Sony MA900

Currently use it with the Asus Xonar DX plus a cheapo Fiio E6 (since the DX doesn't have headphone amp). But now considering if I should upgrade my soundcard to the STX to make the most of my headphones. New price for the STX and STX II is too much over what I would like to pay, so I'm thinking may be I should try to look for a 2nd hand STX...

...or would I be better off keeping my DX and invest on a better headphone amp instead?

The X1 is quite efficient and the MA900(love that headphone) can be driven off a potato so I wouldn't worry too much. You might want to invest in a slightly warmer amp to hide the grain on the X1 I like the E11 for that.

You would get better SQ from the STX yes, I have owned FiiO's and found them to be massively over-rated. My E7 was particularly awful. I use an STX myself. With Fidelio X1's and Q701's, though I may replace both pairs of headphones with a single pair at some point.

I had a DS before my STX, and while the DS was a reasonable sound card, the STX is far better in so many respects. :)

I found them to sound pretty narrow, and yes somewhat panned to either side. The HP50's do it much better imo.

What I really want is a more portable version of the Alpha Dogs, which is probably still the best closed headphone I've heard (XC's are a bit disappointing for the price and the TH900 is way too coloured).

Currently using the following:

Music: Audio Technica ATH-M50s
Games: Razer Barracuda
On the Go: Sound Magic E-10

I've also got a pair of old Sony's which have a REALLY long cable for TV usage.

For amping I use an Audinist HUD-MX2 DAC/HPA

Next up I fancy some open back ones.

Currently working on a wooden cup mod for my MS-1s. Just used a scrap of oak from work to see how sizes etc.. work out, so far so good. Need to get a bit of mesh for the grill and still undecided on whether to keep the 3.5mm jack input or maybe hardwire them. Looking at the pic, I've just realised I need to turn the cup round as I have it on upside down

I felt the same about the XC's I wanted a closed, lush mids, smooth treble! Basically a closed LCD2 but was disappointed. I like the Alphas, could have done with less brightness but the disc would have helped with that for sure.

Can't think of anything that would be a portable Alpha, planars are as you know are really tight and extended on bass making a lot of dynamics sound bloated in the low end. I think the Kenwood K1000 would be a good contender but getting one would be a mission! They are not exactly tiny though but just small enough to take on travels.

The XC, being a closed version of the less-rolled-off-than-2/3 X, was never going to give you what you wanted. What you wanted was the non-existent LCD-2C; no wonder you were disappointed :p

Two mentions of the word "disappointed" in conjunction with the XC on the same page? I can only presume opinion is being coloured by the high price [which is a valid point for any US-to-UK import, plus of course the law of diminishing returns], because I've had mine for several months now - after a honeymoon period - and the closest thing I've got to a grumble is their inevitable heft [but they're still perfectly comfortable for extended sessions]. Sonically, I can't fault them.

The price is ridiculously high. At the same time I can appreciate that the materials used are at a higher quality than most. For £1500+ I expect the sound to be jaw dropping but instead I get a good sound, not an amazing one. I don't usually let price affect me but on this case, being closed and this expensive I had to take it into consideration. The Alphas pretty much have the full package and I preferred the Alphas more even response but I also preferred the XC's imaging.

In terms of value I think AKG are where it's at with their 712 and Annie's but for closed te Alpha and Mad Dog really are excellent. Don't get me wrong the XC's are technically very good! just not £1500 good.

Yeah the Doggy treats do help to smooth out the treble a bit. I've got a single felt square and one foam disc per side on mine and the difference is definitely noticeable.

The best sounding closed portable I've tried so far is probably the Focal Spirit Classic, but the fit was terrible (it must have the smallest circumaural ear pads ever made).

The new Sony flagship might be worth a look, the Head Fi hype train has already left the station.

Music Atomic Floyd super darts
Gaming Razer tiamat 7.1

I personally will never buy Razer or a "gaming headset" again the quality compared to the darts is simply not acceptable.

Will in future be a combo of a amp/dac some nice drivers band seperate mic
