First off, welcome to the forum :)

You'll need to sit you're CBT - as I understand it this isn't a test (more of a course) teaching you basic handling skills and road safety. After that I think you can can ride up to 50cc. I'm sure others will be along shortly to advise on cost and / or to correct me :)

Why do you want a scooter and not a car? Genuine question. It's completely up to you I'm just wondering if you've thought it through.

Thanks for the welcome.

Thanks, I think at 17 it's a 125cc. I just have no idea where to start.

What kind of price for a Cbt test?

Just do a driving test, a car is a lot better than a bloody ped!! bikes are dangereous especially on country lanes. Just go for a car. You can carry a damn lot more too and its a lot better! seriously think aboat this plz.

Because, as far as I know it's more cheep to run a moped than a car.
I don't think I'll have the money to keep a car running.

Well I done mine a good few years ago (yes I'm old :() I think I paid around £90.00.

Having said that after passing my CBT and my DACS I spend the money I'd saved for a bike on a MK1 MR2 :D

I've never looked back since and I've never been on a bike again - each to their own though, there's a few bikers on here that'll be along soon enough to offer advice though, perhaps you'd have been better off posting this in the motors section?

Hi mate.

You will be needing a CBT. It isn't a test, it's exactly what it says 'Compulsory basic training' and it's usually anything from £100-£120 including bike/gear. Don't forget you will also need a provisional licence.

Oh and don't take notice on what everyone else says, only ride something you feel comfy with. I ride a scooter, it's a lot cheaper than a car and it gets me from a to b without a problem.

If you need anymore information feel free to drop me an email in trust, I'll be glad to assist.

CBTs are courses run all over the country, generally lasting a single day. Look for your nearest bike school - they'll run a CBT. It lasts for two years unless you take a full test, in which case your licence takes precedence. You can turn up in a thick-ish coat and jeans and sturdy boots and the place will provide helmet and gloves. Mine cost £100 two years ago. Some places offer free subsequent training if you're not at the required standard by the end of the day.

At 17 you can ride 125cc scooters or motorbikes. I'd seriously consider a bike rather than a scooter, but that's because I think scooters are dangerously slow on any roads with a speed limit > 30 mph, and also you can't accelerate out of a dodgy situation with such a small engine.

You're correct in that running costs for a scooter are much lower for than a car, but then so are bikes (cost ranking: scooter < bikes < car). What are you actually going to use the scooter for? The only people I know (with the exception of GamerT above) who ride scooters are 16yr olds who aren't legally allowed 125 bikes or cars, or people in heavy commute (eg london) who can't be bothered with a clutch, but they ride much bigger scooters eg 400cc engines. You'll need to take a full test for the bigger engines.
