The average English speaker today has a vocabulary of 20k to 45k words where as 500 years ago, the number was under 5k. Gravitational acceleration is always between 9.78 and 9.82 m/s^2, whether or not you use Google, BBC, or Wikipedia where as 500 years ago, items falling on the ground was thought to be caused by God wind farts or something.
It is perfectly possible to shape an informed opinion based on facts and logic in today's world - all the knowledge of Mankind, spanning across Millenia, is a few clicks away. Just because the flood of information makes you suffer from delusions of conspiracies, doesn't mean we're as ignorant as we always have been. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Oh don't get me wrong, the level of knowledge of the average person has greatly improved. But this is a natural and required progression to move with the times.
It is nothing to do with conspiracies either. The fact remains that everything you see and hear in the media is biased, spun, slanted and censored to suit an agenda, the only thing that changes is who's agenda. How then do we ascertain the truth and ascertain who's agenda is correct and truthful?
How do you or I ascertain the truth? We read up on it, but where? The internet? Or watch a news channel? When was it decided the internet was the holy grail of truth? True, you can get somewhere in the ball park of truth using the internet, but what average person has the time and inclination to sift through hours worth of reading and cross referencing sources? Is it not true the average person just comes home from work and sticks the news on TV? Or has a read of a newspaper on their way to work on the train?
Also, propaganda is not a new phenomenon. It has happened for many, many years and is often about the control of information or targeting certain information to certain audiences. We even see party political allegiance in our newspapers in this country, and always have.
Saying I am a CT for recognising information is controlled and presented to suit an agenda and that propaganda it is still used today is a bit of a straw man in my opinion.
Of course a lot of information is reliably available, but most of it is history or proven scientific fact. When it comes to current affairs, the waters become muddied because there are Governments, businesses and any number of other organisations and individuals who have a vested interest in showing themselves in a good light, or hiding their bad side, in order to win support. Look to the American presidential elections, or the British elections if you wish. It is all spun, contrived and scripted to create the image the party leadership wants, one which they believe is the most popular with voters (based on millions of files of demographic information on areas along with poles and surveys etc). Politicians even get versed in body language so as not to appear threatening, but also not weak. You surely must have noticed the thumb thing that Cameron loves to do? Kind of like pointing but not pointing with is thumb held flat over his finger when he is......making a.....very.....serious point? You see even the metering of the speech is rehearsed for better effect.
Even the adverts you watch on television are targeted, and designed for effect. There is a huge amount of psychology involved in modern media, down to the colours used, the music and the presentation. We even now have targeted advertising to peddle wares of recently visited websites or searched terms in Google.
It is there to see plain as day and you don't have to be a CT to understand what it is and that information and control of information is big business and hugely important to governments worldwide.
We have had the arms race, the space race, the nuclear arms race and now we have the information race where governments want to be tapped into every facet of your life in one way or another. Why would they want to do that?
They will tell you it is for your own benefit, they will say it is needed because of the threat of terrorism (A beast which it could be argued western governments are guilty of creating in the first place through constant meddling in the eastern block and intervention in Afghanistan during the cold war).
But the real reason is control. You only have to look at the anti terrorism laws to see how an individuals rights have been undermined for 'the greater good' and the relatively recent revelations regarding Tempora and PRISM to see it is already happening.
Knowledge is power, as they say!
