What important when building a sub enclosure?

Hi,

Just thinking about getting a sub for my Focus, well i dont want to use a standard box due to the space it takes up in the boot. Well what are the important things when it comes to designing/building an enclosure? I am thinking about it going along the side of my boot along the whole length, would i be correct saying that the area inside the box needs to be a certain amount? Also does the sub need a certain area behind it of only air?
 
yeah theres quite a bit of maths involved in doing ya own sub box it has to have a certain volume to get the most from it.

Is it a 10 or 12" sub ure after?

Halfords do alright deals for subs & amps <£200 do nicely if u aint after loads
 
Seems easy enough, and well, just put it this way the maths is not a problem. I was looking at a 10" setup i think, found some decent packs from cad or cas online. Only want to spend £130odd on the amp,wiring and sub really.

Edit - Is it alright to have the amp in the inside of the box? Im one for not liking anything on show or it must have its one place as it were.

Well I have that exact setup in my Focus, so you have a pretty good idea how it would sound. ;)

Yup i do, but wait, isnt that £15 less then you paid? ;)

Edit - One other thing i realised is that id want a grill for it. Any ideas?

Well actually not sure but a well tuned sub box gives a better bass note but a ported sub box is only there to give massive thumps but that’s kind of vague, somebody else will know better.
How bout something nice hidden in the spare wheel well and make AA work for their subscription fee if a flat occurs :p
 
I guess he means dont have an open enclosure unless you want to be a chav? I was going to do a fully enclosed one anyways as its easier to make.

Edit - In the link you gave me it said this about Vented ones thoguh.

Im also not that keen on losing the spare really. :S

Ported enclosures are perfectly fine, as long as they are properly tuned, which is much more difficult than getting a sealed enclosure (infinite baffle) correct. A poorly tuned bass-reflex system gives the typical "one note" bass that some people seem to think is good sound.
 
I love it. :D Its a brillaint first car in my opinion. It has enough power to start with if your a new driver. The handling should help you get out of situations if you mis judge a corner, which is one thing i love about it. Also its large enough to be practical really. The only downsides are the mpg isnt the best and the standard head unit is useless.

I have worked out the enclosure will have to be about 20cm wide to have enough volume of air. Which isnt bad in my opinion.

Well really it would be the depth of the enclosure but i am thinking it in terms of how its orientated in the boot you see, hense the mix up. :p The sub needs atleast 13cm behind it i found out aswell so its all fine.

Thats just about what id like to do but just build it myself so its cheap.
 
get a 12" FLI TRAP you can get them for £100 or less and they are very neat and tidy having the AMP built in 200watt RMS not shabby. I sold my 2*12" sonys and my 1000watt RMS (1600peak) pentagon amp, far too much bass and took up the whole boot. and I just love this, I have plenty of boot left, it sounds great and they are designed by VIBE who are great. Big reccomend.
