so do you write "equals" or "=" when you want to say something is equal to another thing, when trying to demonstrate maths? "!=" is just another way of typing the = with a line through it since we can't do that here.. or can we?

surely its better and easier to read and type 2+2 != 5 rather than

two plus two does not equal five.

edit: whoever brought up the double equals ("=="), there is no use for that in a mathematic equation anyway so it wouldnt be needed. The triple equal sign used in maths might come up but there is no real need for it so writing an "=" would suffice.

It's a joke that you seem to have taken too seriously.

It's a programming symbol used for a comparator which returns a boolean response (is X equal to Y?), where "=" would assign a variable to a value (Set X to Y).
