What is a good salary in UK at present?

What age are your kids out of interest? If you're paying for childcare, private school or their uni costs, then I can see how they cost a big chunk. But otherwise I'm not sure how they would "demolish" a 100k income.

It’s easy for kids to suck up any and all disposable income: nicer clothes, more expensive days out, more expensive clubs or lessons, additional childcare, etc.

Indeed, just because the kids is in school doesn't mean they are magically cheap. I am paying well over 3500CHF/months for 2 kids in daycare even although they both have school every day (no Wednesday afternoon, as is the norm). This was over 5k per month when both were pre-school, and this is just you standard public daycare. My son is neural diverse and requires extra therapy, most of which is covered by insurance but we pay for some additional therapy and taxi transport- 800-900chf month. Swim lessons are about 1500CHF per year/child. Music lessons something like 1000CHF for my son. My daughter is in a ski race team - 2K CHF per year tuition but that excludes all the skis camp, next week I take her to the first training week - 1800CHF for here and I have to pay 900CHF for the privilege of working from a hotel for a week. But it is half-term so no day care, to sign up 1 child for 1 week full time is close to 1K for 1 week, all the other sports caps like swimming also about 800-900 but not all day. I am then factoring 500-800chf per weekend at ski camps until christmas, then probably another 1500CHF in hotel rooms as enters competitions.

Then you have to factor in things like housing and holidays. We wanted both our kids to have their own bedroom so they do not disturb each other etc. that added about 400K CHF to the cost of our house. Holiday costs are at least double with 2 kids, there are essentially no discounts for flights and hotels . In fact it can be hard to find a hotel room for 4, and 2 separate rooms always leads to problems so end up in an apartment. Instead of 1000CHF for a week for 2 adults in a hotel, we pay 2.5-3K per week for an apartment

Yeah, I could ell my daughter than she can't join the ski club because it is too expensive but I would be depriving her of something she absolutely loves doing and building such a strong character. My kids don;t have to have swim lessons, but we live next to a lake and becoming a strong swimmer in childhood has life long advantageous

I've got 2 that have just started primary school. I reckon they 'cost' us around £500 a month as a rough ballpark. That's covers things like clothes, toys, clubs, extra food, the odd day out, etc. As they get older I'm sure the school trips get more expensive, so do the clothes and shoes etc, but I can't see how they would 'demolish' a 100k salary.

*Edit* - this is obviously very dependent on how many kids you have!

There are 5 of them. 12,9,7 and twins that are 4

Considering I pay into a pension and I try to save some kind of money (very little) at the end of the month, it just gets eaten up. Cost of living has hit us HARD, a food shop is at least £250 a week at the moment

My kids get what they want at this age, it won't be the case as they get older because I just won't have that kind of money, if you read my earlier post as it said there is no help from anyone else in my family or the wife's, we are completely on our own, and that's fine!

If we all go out as a family you can't imagine the amount of rude people I meet all because I have a large family, people just stare, or roll there eyes. I have even had people over the last couple of years come up to me and literally say "how could you have that many children, you are selfish!?!"

I normally reply that the last was suppose to be 4 not 5 but once it's twins your a bit powerless to change it :) that normally reduces the blow to there brain

It's hard to keep a low profile when you got half a football team in children lol

Unfortunately unless you have that many children you will never understand what it's like and most people judge you

1 kid at Uni (just started year 2), 1 hopefully starting next year. Mortgage, 2 cars. Money is soon gone :(

Looking at finances today, mortgage will be paid off end of next year, but we pay the difference in Uni accommodation from the maintenance loan - approx £1500 per year, so x2 next year. But also £70 per week for 1 to live on, so again, x2 next year. £8600 for them to go to Uni. No idea if this is the norm. And no, first one doesn't work at all, we'll see if the 2nd one does! I'd rather they focus on studies and Uni life than working.

We're about average wage i think - around £65k between us.

1 kid at uni, just started 3rd of 4 year undergrad MSc (to be a Pharmacist) cost to me is £350/month. 2 older kids who have flown. Small mortgage left, fixed for remainder of term. £83K gross between us. I’m 48 and have a contract until i’m 57, hoping to extend that to 60 then retire from the RAF (that will be 34 years as left for 4 before going back). Probably then work 2 days/week delivering food to people for Asda!

Mmmm, spooky - just worked out mine per month, per child = £358.

Like i say, my £358 goes on making up the accommodation shortfall and £280 living allowance. Is this similar to yourself if you don't mind me asking?

I have a contract until 54 with the RAF - no idea if i will make that tbh. The RAF is a bit of a **** show atm :(

I also left for a couple of years before coming back :)

Also same idea as you, part time when i retire. Wife has worked part time her whole life, it would be nice if the roles were reversed (as if!)

The cost of Child care is truly shocking. I don't know how people with middling to low wages cope. Where its borderline choice as to whether one parent stays home vs going to work.
Especially if you have a big mortgage or rent. Like many young parents do.
Then you get clothes, games consoles etc. How many peoples kids DONT have a console now? Those things are 100s

Cheers shagga! Interesting to see the Midlands up so high, got to be Rolls Royce I assume.
Cardiff is about 24.6k according to that.
But the surrounding counties are quite low. With port talbot tata steel works shedding 1000s of jobs that will be a big hit to Bridgend I'm sure. It might even show in figures.

Wales (no surprise) is the lowest.

Often not a priority for these people; every pound spent on insurance is a pound less to be spent in the pub in the short term.
Income protection is the last thing on the list of you're stretched (stretched by choice or not)

Rolls Royce, Toyota, Trains and all the Tier 2/3 supporting the big boys. Means quite a few well paid engineers, and unionised production staff (not so much Toyota) decent wages not ground breaking.

Its frustrating that the town center is a complete dump it really doesn't need to be. But the last decades of Labour run councils due to production type them and us mentality been a disaster. But hey ho I guess that's all town centers now.

Yeah Derby has never had a great town centre but over the last few years it's been an absolute tip. Can't even remember the last time I went in and I live on the outskirts!

Easier to get to Burton that has everything within a stone's throw and super cheap parking.

The only people out of work in Derby are lazy scumbags or on the disability sickness fibremeilaga choo Choo train.

Don't forget JCB isn't too far away either and when you need to let your hair down just get on Oblivion at Alton Towers!

The Midlands is definitely the future when the south implodes on itself.
