What is Atheism?

I think I've changed my mind. I'm ignostic.

Awesome, as far as I'm concerned this thread (and all like it) are now worthwhile if even one person has reconsidered their position.

Having done a bit more checking apathetic agnosticism might be the best description yet for me although I can't resist debates like this so I'm not entirely apathetic about it. I could, however, get lost for days reading through the various sub-categories of religious (dis)belief and the ideas highlighted within them - non-sensical but perfectly grammatically correct sentences such as colourless green ideas sleep furiously for instance.

I'm surprised that Agnostics really have such a need to define themselves as such if they don't give a rat's ass.

If someone asks me what i believe, i just go "no" or "probably" or "why do you care you hippy?"

I don't need to define myself any more strictly than agnostic, most people who would ask me about it in everyday conversation probably won't even have heard of some of the more esoteric demarcations that can be applied. I just find it interesting to break it down as far as I can and work out what the closest term is for my state of (non)theism.

So sure, to most people who ask I'd simply be agnostic or perhaps even atheist depending on their level of knowledge and my willingness to explain further.

In my town, the word 'Agnostic' would be enough to stump them. The call cars 'Horseless carriages'. I don't fancy being executed for witchcraft so i keep my thoughts private haha.

I am amused by those people saying being Agnostic is where it's at. Come on pick a side. Sitting on the fence is not the best option.

I prefer to revel in the hatred of both sides :D

Although I do always seem to end up with deeply religious friends:/

I haven't reconsidered my position. I've only changed my opinion of the best way to describe it.

Anthropomorphise = To give human characteristics to something. Eg. Mickey Mouse because he can talk and walks on two legs.

good find.

Sums me up so far. Though not 100% maybe 90% ish because even if God was proven to exist (For example your sitting at your computer posting on ocuk and the last trump sounds and suddenly the earth opens up.. all the chosen literally rise up to heaven blah blah wrath god's judgement comes down to earth whatever)

Anyway even if something as miraculous as that happens it doesnt change the value of X. X = me before God proven status and X = me after status of God is proven.

However as always its prolly our concept of God that is balls.. its a man-made concept really and theres so many variations doing the rounds..... Some folk interpret God as being "Gaia" spirit of the earth, some as a beardy old man old testament stylee, heck even as a mystical energy field which surrounds us all :D So not actually as a person at all.

The way I see it, if there is some sort of "higher power" or "unseen force" (and that in itself is a big if) what are the chances of it being anything remotely like any description of "god" that anyone has ever come up with?
Same here...I don't think a god is anything like the fairy tale book that is the Bible, if there really is something (which I doubt) it won't be anything any humans would have a clue about.

It still shocks me people can take the bible to heart, how people can be brainwashed and have faith from that I don't know, it's so weak.

Thread title + 5 pages led me to the conclusion that when i clicked onto the final page there would be a large mess due to mass debation waiting for me...
