What is drum and bass?

Have to agree with Sic, darker = better. I've not listened to much over the last couple of years but some of the stuff during the mid to late 90s was awesome. I'll never forget the first time I heard Alien Girl drop at the Opera House  I bought it on vinyl, flipped it over and thought Cutslo was even better.

When I think dark Drum and Bass I think VNV Nation for some reason. But, thats Industrial.

No - it's EBM. Too much poofterism to be industrial.

I'd like to throw The Bug and Bogdan Raczynski into the mix, please.

all music is just noise looped. even classical music has repetition in it. what a moronic comment.

Im quite aware of that thanks. What a moronic comment. I was simply saying, DnB literally has no variety in it. You could listen to the first few seconds of a DnB track and then not have to listen to the other 20 minutes of it, in those first few seconds you've heard the whole song and saved your ears

try listening to some pendulum, its not at all like that. Im not saying dnb isnt repetitive, just not all of it is.

it really doesn't seem that you are. and you obviously haven't listened to any dnb, otherwise you'd know that it's not all the same. fair enough, if you don't like the idea of listening to it, then say that. but also add that you're not entitled to an opinion on it because you, quite clearly, haven't listened to it. my guess is that you see dnb as music listened to by chavs in novas and you just don't like the idea.

if you saw it done live, you'd totally change your mind.

No mate trust me if anything I've heard too much for my liking. My sixth form common room, it was all they played, and is probably a big reason why I despise it so much.

And your probably right, infact you are right, my dislike of it plays a big part in my stereotyping of it. But at the same time I am entitled to an opinion, If i hadnt listened to it before no, but the fact I have more than enough means I am able to voice it.

Same as some people would say and have said to me, stuff like Korn and Slipknot are just people shouting into a mic and banging a load of instruments with no real music behind it. I disagree and like it, but at the same time wouldnt disagree with someone who thought different as its an opinion

Probably mate, but theres been a few discussions where you've made a pretty big sweeping statement or voiced a strong opinion you wont budge on, but why should you, its your opinion :)

The vast majority of drum and bass fans I know are converted metallers.

I love both. Probably metal more though :)

As for hearing the first 4 seconds and having heard it all, that isn't an opinion, it's actually an untrue statement. For example, go here Noisia Myspace and listen to, say, Endgame, and you'll see that the only thing that is repeated more or less the whole time is the core drum beat. There are different beats added over the top, variations in bassline, both the tune and the sound of the bass, elements are added and removed... It's bloody complicated!

And it's typical of modern drum & bass.

Drum and bass = 5 seconds of noise looped for about 20 minutes, its terrible :(

To each their own. I think you're very wrong although I can understand why a lot of people think that.

DnB is the heavy metal of the dance world and it rocks hard! You should check out Mampi Swift, Friction, Hype, Andy C, Goldie, etc etc for some real class DnB.

As already stated Pendulum are a good place to start too, though I find you quickly move on to better artists once the style of music clicks.

Speaking of grimey DnB I'm off to see Randal (and Nicky Blackmarket) this Friday in Manc. Should be a fantastic night. Then I've got Andy C next thursday at The Warehouse Project in Manc (the best 3 months that Manchester will have seen in years and years and years).
